Job summaryThe UCLH LGI Surgical Fellow role is a 6 month (possible extension), post ST5+ position designed to provide comprehensive, advanced training in the surgical and multidisciplinary management of complex GI and colorectal pathology. The position offers immersive experience in a high-volume, tertiary referral centre with a strong academic, research, and clinical governance ethos.
Main duties of the job- To make an effective contribution to reaching the Trust's vision, strategic objectives and key work programmes.
- To enhance and develop the General Surgery Service
- To promote the highest clinical standards
- To work in conjunction with the multidisciplinary team to provide effective delivery and management of the service.
- To participate in the teaching and clinical supervision of the surgical trainees
- To actively participate in departmental and trust matters concerning clinical governance.
- To participate in regular audit of clinical activity and effectiveness that aid improvement and development of the General Surgery service.
- To ensure active participation in continuing medical education (CME) for self and others.

Person SpecificationKnowledge and QualificationsEssential- Full registration with GMC by time of appointment
- FRCS or equivalent
Desirable- Proven ability to carry out high quality original research leading to publication in peer reviewed MD/PhD
ExperienceEssential- General Surgery (Colorectal subspecialty) or equivalent experience.
- Laparoscopic skills
Desirable- Relevant higher degree in research or teaching
- Experience of multi-disciplinary working
Skills and AbilitiesEssential- Evidence of good written and verbal communication skills.
- Academic interest in IBD, with a track record of audit, research, or publication desirable.
Desirable- Ability and enthusiasm to teach medical undergraduates and Allied Health Professionals, and to train junior surgeons.
- Personal participation in audit
CommunicationEssential- Ability to communicate with clarity
- Ability to build rapport, listen, persuade/ negotiate.
- Ability to see patients as people, ability to empathise and work co-operatively with others.
