Job summary
The Department of Dental Medicine is delighted to invite applications for Locum Consultant in Special Care Dentistry at University College London Hospital. The post is for maternity leave cover for a period of 12 months. Successful applicants will join an established team providing a wide range of specialist care and postgraduate training. Applicants will be expected to have excellent communication skills, be able to build effective working relationships at all levels, and also have experience in postgraduate teaching and training.

Main duties of the job
The post-holder will be accountable to the Divisional Clinical Director and report to the Clinical Lead. Direct Clinical Care Activities
The appointee will be expected to:
  • Provide a courteous and efficient special care service to all users
  • Provide high quality dentistry for special care dentistry patients
  • Provide high quality dentistry under sedation including inhalation and intravenous sedation
  • Deliver the general outpatient Special Care Dental Service alongside other consultants
  • Support the specialised pathways within the service including the Haematology Dental Service, head and neck cancer dental pathway and general anaesthetic pathway
  • Deliver the clinical protocols for all patients undergoing special care dentistry to ensure that processes and procedures in place conform to local and national standards
  • Undertake continued professional development and be aware of any new clinical developments in dentistry, and to regularly update his/her skills and clinical practice.
  • Undertake teaching and training in special care dentistry for all levels of staff which will include clinicians, trainees as well as support staff
  • Be a member of the Department of Dental Medicine and work in an integrated way with other members of the department;
  • Share, with other consultants, clinical and administrative work, and the management and supervision of junior staff;

  • Actively participate in departmental meetings and represent the department within the Trust and externally;
  • Represent the department on various committees within the Trust as well as taking responsibility for particular delegated areas according to their interests and availability. The Clinical Director is responsible for delegating these responsibilities;
  • Ensure cross-cover with consultant colleagues to maximise patient experience and the efficiency of the service.

Person Specification
Knowledge and Qualifications
Essential
  • Eligible for full registration with the United Kingdom General Dental Council (GDC) at time of appointment and hold a current licence to practise
  • On the GDC's Specialist Register for Special Care Dentistry

Desirable
  • Diploma in Special Care Dentistry
  • MSc or higher training within the scope of Special Care dentistry

Clinical Experience
Essential
  • Experience of dental treatment of adults under sedation, general anaesthetic and behavioural management techniques.
  • Experience in dental management of medically compromised patients.
  • Management of patients with complex oral / dental problems
  • Experience in provision of dental treatment in primary care dental settings

Desirable
  • Experience as a Specialist in Special Care dentistry
  • Have significantly contributed to identifying, planning, organising and leading innovative projects to improve service delivery.
  • Experience of multidisciplinary working and successful development of joint development projects.
  • Contribution to clinical guidelines and protocols for delivering oral healthcare to Special Care Dental patients

Knowledge
Essential
  • Effective application of evidence based practice in clinical management of patients
  • Understanding of and commitment to Good Medical Practice
  • Knowledge of risk management
  • Understanding of the direction of the NHS

Management and Leadership
Essential
  • Demonstrable ability to work across organisational boundaries and establish effective relationships (patient, inter and intra-departmental).
  • Ability to work successfully in a multi-disciplinary team and across organisational boundaries
  • Ability to manage own time and workload and prioritise clinical work
  • Ability to appraise own performance, demonstrate insight and act on feedback

Desirable
  • Demonstrable management and leadership skills and experience for the NHS environment.
  • Able to respond to changing demands, introduce and manage change.

Clinical Governance Audit Management & IT
Essential
  • An understanding of clinical governance and risk management and experience of working in these areas
  • Effective Participation in Quality Improvement and Audit by demonstration of completed QIPs and audits
  • Knowledge and understanding of the NHS policies and procedures
  • Ability to use IT and standard Microsoft packages

Desirable
  • Management of a clinical service

Research. Teaching skill & experience
Essential
  • Ability to critically appraise scientific literature
  • Experience of teaching general dental practitioners, postgraduates and junior staff
  • Understanding of the HEE priorities for Education and Training

Desirable
  • Publications in refereed Journals
  • Research relevant to Special Care Dentistry
  • Experience in delivering HEE priorities for Education and Training (e.g. as a clinical supervisor, participation in projects)
