Description
Job summary
We are excited to invite applications for a Consultant in Anaesthesia within University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB).
The current opportunity is for consultants to join the dedicated Anaesthetics team based at Birmingham Heartlands, Good Hope and Solihull hospitals.
We are looking to appoint consultants with an interest in Vascular, Regional, paediatric and colorectal anaesthesia and perioperative medicine. They will be expected to join the general on-call at Heartlands Hospital or the General and obstetric on call at Good Hope Hospital as part of the on-call commitment. The appointee will be expected to participate in the Divisional and Departmental quality improvement projects as well as undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
We are more than happy to arrange a call, or an informal visit, should you wish to discuss further. Please contact Clinical Service Lead for Anaesthetics Dr Saravanababu Gnanaseakaran - via email to saravanababu.gnanaseakaran@uhb.nhs.uk or to Mr Daniel Evans General Manager - daniel.evans@uhb.nhs.uk
Main duties of the job
The core component of this post is to provide anaesthetic cover for a variety of surgical services, if a consultant has a special interest in a sub speciality, then we will try to accommodate it.
A standard full time job plan will contain 10 programmed activities which could be filled by a variety of options from currently uncovered lists and flexible cover for consultant leave. Solihull Hub has extended lists running from 07:00 hrs to 19:00 hrs and employed consultants will be expected to take up some of these lists.
A programmed activity will normally have a timetable value of 4 hours, and a full-time consultant will normally devote 8.5 programmed activities to direct clinical care. The remaining programmed activities will be devoted to supporting professional activities.
An example 10 PA job plan is indicated in Appendix 1, but the successful candidate will be invited to discuss these options with the Clinical Service Lead on appointment.
On Call Commitments
Teaching & Training
The successful applicant would be expected to have an active interest in the areas of both teaching and research. Our junior anaesthetic training has recently been adapted to reflect the new RCOA Anaesthesia curriculum. Due to the number of specialties covered at the Trust, we can deliver most of the curriculum across our four sites except advanced paediatric cases. We have therefore recently invited applications for trainees wishing to pursue a CESR pathway. Training is coordinated by the specialty education leads but involves informal and formal teaching by all consultants. There is also a departmental programme of teaching mapped to RCOA examination requirements which is co-ordinated by the junior anaesthetic staff with support from consultants.
