Job summary
University Hospitals Birmingham have a great opportunity to recruit an enthusiastic and well-motivated Senior Paediatric Audiologist.

The post holder will be based at Heartlands Hospital in Birmingham, with potential travel to Solihulll Hospital. You will be working within a motivated and enthusiastic team to deliver excellent patient care.

The post holder will be an experienced, qualified Audiologist who will undertake a full range of diagnostic clinical tests including activities that are highly specialised, complex and non-routine. The work will involve a significant degree of responsibility and will require the ability to communicate complex and sensitive information clearly and effectively, both verbally or through an interpreter when necessary.

The post holder will work with the Head of Audiology and the paediatric team to ensure that Clinical and Professional standards are maintained at all times.

Main duties of the job
The main role of the Paediatric Audiologist will be to independently provide routine and non-routine paediatric behavioural assessments, perform highly specialised paediatric test procedures and highly specialised assessments for paediatric patients, as well as partake in specialised clinics as directed by the Clinical Lead for Paediatric Audiology.

The ideal candidate will be friendly and approachable with excellent communication skills and a proactive attitude to service development. They will strive to continue providing a family-friendly service that meets the needs of the local population.

Person Specification
QualificationsEssential
  • BSc (Hons) Audiology or equivalent for example MSc or equivalent level qualification in Audiology with Certificate of Competence in Audiology (CAC or equivalent).
  • Registered Clinical scientist or Clinical Physiologist HCPC, or AHCS registered in appropriate Modality
  • Relevant and appropriate level of post qualification experience
  • Demonstrable paediatric experience

Desirable
  • Membership of BAA, BSA
  • Evidence of clinical competency for example M level in paediatric experience with a complex patient caseload, and a variety of advanced testing methods.

ExperienceEssential
  • Post qualification experience in Audiology
  • Knowledge of BSA and BAA clinical guidance and recommended procedures
  • Knowledge kept up to date through regular CPD
  • Knowledge of routine and non-routine diagnostic audiology assessment procedures, their interpretation and their implications for patient management
  • Advanced knowledge and experience in paediatric audiology, including rehabilitation of hearing-impaired infants and children to include those with complex needs.
  • Demonstrable experience in the relevant clinical areas and evidence of clinical competency with a complex patient caseload

Desirable
  • Knowledge of the IQIPs criteria
  • Knowledge of referral criteria for CI
  • Participation in research and development activities, including audit of clinical outcomes as required

Additional CriteriaEssential
  • Able to select, order and take impressions for appropriate types of ear moulds, and to modify ear moulds as required.
  • Able to select and fit appropriate models of hearing aid using appropriate methods for fitting and verification of hearing aid characteristics, including REM and RECD measures
  • Good IT skills. Knowledge of common computing packages for word processing, spreadsheets, presentation packages and databases.
  • Experience with at least one audiology patient record keeping software package, preferably Audit Base.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal, in order to explain analytical, scientific and clinical aspects of the work to a variety of people including patients and relatives, scientific colleagues, clinical professionals, service managers.
  • Highly developed co--ordination skills with good dexterity and hand-eye co-ordination and those skills required for the performance of fine analytical techniques.
  • Ability to work under pressure with emotional resilience and ability to prioritise and plan work
  • Good attendance record
  • Good personal organisation skills
  • Possess a full category driving licence

Desirable
  • Diagnostic hearing assessment of babies referred from the Newborn Hearing Screen Program including Auditory Brainstem Assessment, Otoacoustic Emissions, and High Frequency Tympanometry
  • Objective diagnostic assessment of older children under sedation or general anaesthetic
  • Assessment and rehabilitation of complex needs paediatric cases with auditory processing disorder/tinnitus/ hyperacusis /nonorganic hearing loss
  • Make formal presentations to groups of colleagues and other health professionals
  • Demonstrable ability to lead others
