Job SummaryCoventry and Warwickshire Pathology Services (CWPS) offer a range of diagnostics tests across a number of departments. The Cellular Pathology service receives approximately 56,000 cases per year across 3 NHS Trusts; University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust, George Eliot NHS Trust and South Warwickshire University NHS Foundation Trust.
The Histology laboratories are based at University Hospital Coventry and Warwick Hospital. It is an exciting time to join the department as we are currently implementing new laboratory equipment. We have also recently implemented the Sectra Digital Pathology solution and brand new Hamamatsu scanners, and will be upgrading the Pathology LIMS system in 2026.
CWPS have been given funding for extra laboratory workforce to support in meeting the increasing demand for Histology case processing and Cancer Services across the Trusts. We are looking for a Biomedical Scientist to join our team.
The successful applicant will have the IBMS registration portfolio and be HCPC registered.

Please apply for this job as soon as you can, if interested.Main duties of the jobYou must be able to support the provision of a full histopathology diagnostic service, which will include BMS cut-up, embedding, microtomy, H&E staining, special stains, and immunohistochemistry. The successful candidate must demonstrate commitment to improvements to quality and standards within their area of work. The laboratory operates a full rotation system through all sections. Training and encouragement is provided for CPD and other personal development.

Job responsibilities- Perform daily routine and specialised diagnostic services on patient and environmental samples containing potentially infectious material. This will be done on a rotational basis using manual and automated techniques to exacting medical and scientific standards according to standard operating procedures
- Perform daily interpretation of diagnostic investigations. Know how to proceed in the event of technical / analytical non conformity and when to inform the line manager
- Accurate and timely entry of data onto the laboratory computer system and/or automated analysers using a VDU and keyboard workstation
- As appropriate record reports for authorisation in electronic form and / or verbally to persons authorised to receive them
- Quality check outputs including maintaining necessary internal record
- Participate in external and internal quality assurance schemes and vertical and horizontal audits as directed by senior staff
- Work to meet laboratory performance targets as directed by senior staff
- Under supervision, develop and investigate new techniques as required by the changing needs of the service
- To regularly inform and discuss progress of training towards a post registration specialist competence portfolio, with the laboratory training officer and other senior staff as appropriate
Person SpecificationQualification/TrainingEssential- Biomedical Science degree acceptable to the HCPC.
- Current registration with HCPC.
- Evidence of CPD.
- Completion of Generic Registration Portfolio.
ExperienceEssential- Evidence of recent laboratory experience.
- Problem solving.
Desirable- Working towards completion of post-registration discipline specific competence portfolio.
KnowledgeEssential- Demonstrate a broad based knowledge in Pathology or in required discipline.
Skills & AbilitiesEssential- Be able to speak, receive and issue instructions without risk of misunderstanding.
- Be able to follow complex documents such as a standard operating procedure.
- High level of accuracy and attention to detail.
- IT and keyboard skills.
