Job summary
An exciting opportunity for an Experienced, Motivated, Dynamic Registered Health Professional to join the Fracture Clinic Team at University Hospitals.

Supporting the running of the Fracture Clinic Services, as part of the wider Clinical Support Services Outpatients team.

The Fracture Clinic will incorporate the Trauma and Elective clinics, Virtual Fracture Clinic and Plaster Room Services (Adult, Paediatric and Outreach Teams).

Please note that as part of this role you will be expected to currently hold or be willing to complete the British Orthopaedic Association, British Casting Certificate.

Main duties of the job
You will support the current management team in the running and development of the Fracture Clinic services.

Using UHCWi methodology to identify areas for improvement, to enhance the patient journey and improve/maintain staff wellbeing and morale.

You will help maintain a safe environment for patients and staff by monitoring health and Safety / Risk assessments, ensuring effective roster management and day to day skill mix, performing local and Trust wide audits - monitoring trends and acting on results.

Working with wider teams within the Trust to support sickness absence, effective use of resources and finance, and providing a sound learning environment for students and learners.
  • Accountable for own actions in accordance with own governing body e.g. British Orthopaedic Association, Nursing and Midwifery Council - Code of Professional Conduct. Will contribute to corporate objectives, acting within local, Trust and statutory guidelines and policies at all times.
  • Effectively communicate information regarding clinical decisions, policy and care pathways to patients/carers and the multi-professional team.
  • A skilled practitioner and clinical leader providing support to the management team, participating in service/policy development. The post holder will deputise in the absence of the clinic manager & will be responsible for the management of the team in their absence.

Job responsibilities
  • Support the management of clinical and operational processes within the Fracture Clinic, liaising with members of the Multidisciplinary Teams of all groups involved e.g., Trauma and Orthopaedics (adult and Paediactrics), Emergency Department. Identifying areas of service improvement and implementing improvements with the team using UHCWi methodology. Leading the service as an autonomous practitioner, providing a high standard of care to the patient group
  • Responsible for clinical assessment of a group of patients in accordance with own qualification, ensuring appropriate care is planned, implemented, and evaluated/audited. Ensuring patient information is up to date and acting as patient advocate where necessary.
  • Organisation of and participation in cross-departmental/organisational activities including HR, sickness management, resourcing, and bleep-holder responsibilities as appropriate.
  • Demonstrate highly technical and/or practical clinical skills, to ensure optimum patient management including, in accordance with own registration; complex patient monitoring, wound management, medicines management, safeguarding procedures and equipment maintenance - acting as a resource and role model for junior staff.
  • Develop and educate staff and students, participating in supervision, mentorship and appraisal as required. Monitoring mandatory training compliance of self and others to ensure it is completed in a timely manner.
  • Manage expected and unexpected clinical events requiring varying levels of physical effort according to patient dependency/clinical need.
  • Support patients, carers and others during difficult situations arising in the clinical area, e.g., imparting bad news or following an unexpected event.
  • Promote and monitor adherence to Health and Safety and Trust policy designed to protect healthcare staff and service users from known hazards. Supporting the development of local risk assessments as necessary.
  • Maintain a clean, safe environment ensuring adherence to Trust standards of cleanliness, hygiene and infection control at all times. Using audit tools to monitor this.
  • To be responsible for the ordering and maintenance of stock levels within the Fracture Clinic, liaising with materials management and participating in product evaluation and research. Ensure materials are cost effective and also appropriate for the treatments provided.
  • To support the management of staffing roster, using the e-roster system. Ensuring safe, effective skill mix and staffing levels to support clinics. Ensuring the staffing levels are safe and also cost effective.
  • Utilise and ensure self and others utilise information and IT systems effectively to ensure patient information and outcomes are recorded accurately and timely. Ensuring all actions and patient care is documented accurately and legibly as per Trust policy. Keeping up to date and acting as point of contact for developments in IT systems cascading information to staff where necessary.
  • Support and carry out local, Trust wide and national audits in a timely manner, analysing results and and formulating action plans with the management team to maintain and improving standards to meet KPIs etc

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
  • Hold a current Professional Registration with evidence of continuing Professional Development.
  • Teaching and Assessing qualification with evidence of recent update.
  • Willingness to undertake British Orthopaedic Association British Casting Certificate (if not already held)
  • Study at level 6 (degree / diploma)

Desirable
  • British Orthopaedic Association British Casting Certificate.
  • Willingness to undertake Professional Nurse Advocate Role (nursing only)

Experience
Essential
  • Recent professional clinical experience at Band 5 or above in Trauma or Orthopaedics.
  • Ability to successfully manage people and change.
  • Professional clinical experience in an outpatient setting.
  • Experience in carrying out audits and acting on findings.
  • Experience/ knowledge of complex wound management.

Desirable
  • Experience of Plaster room service
  • Experience in HR and Management Related Issues.
  • Experience in Resource Management.
  • Experience of managing staffing levels/skill mix and rostering.
  • Experience of budget/finance management.

Knowledge
Essential
  • A knowledgeable clinician with the ability to apply evidence based practice to a range of clinical skills.
  • A sound knowledge of professional policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of Trauma or Orthopaedic injuries/conditions and complex wound management
  • Knowledge of clinical governance & a commitment to clinical supervision and staff development
  • Knowledge of safeguarding policy and processes
