Description

University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust
Consultant In Intensive Care Medicine
Closing date: 22 November 2026

Job summary
Following a £5 million investment, the Intensive Care Unit has undergone a significant refurbishment and expansion and now provides 14 modern bed spaces, including two side rooms. The unit is currently funded to a dependency of 08, comprising Level 2 and Level 3 critical care, with beds used flexibly according to patient need.

The refurbished unit provides an excellent environment in which to deliver and develop critical care services. Medical equipment includes integrated patient monitoring and ventilator technology alongside electronic patient records and prescribing systems, with bedside ultrasound and modern renal replacement therapies available to support the management of acutely unwell patients. There is significant opportunity to continue developing the service, including enhanced care pathways and new ways of delivering care.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a supportive and forward-thinking department, providing high-quality critical care to a broad range of patients and working closely with colleagues across the wider multidisciplinary team.

We welcome applications from candidates with or without a background in Anaesthesia. Our priority is to appoint an excellent intensivist who will complement our existing team, and the role can be shaped to reflect the successful candidate's skills, experience and areas of specialist interest.

Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will contribute to the delivery and development of the Intensive Care service, including clinical care, outreach, governance, teaching, quality improvement and service development. There will also be opportunities to take on leadership responsibilities and develop areas of special interest.

For candidates who are also suitably qualified in Anaesthesia and wish to maintain anaesthetic practice, there is scope for this to be incorporated into the role. However, Anaesthesia is not an essential requirement for appointment.

The department places a strong emphasis on multidisciplinary working, education and training, clinical governance and continuous improvement. Consultants are actively encouraged to contribute to teaching, audit and the ongoing development of the service.

We are looking for someone who is collaborative, enthusiastic and keen to play an active role in developing Critical Care services for our patients. Whether your background is solely in Intensive Care Medicine or dual practice with Anaesthesia, we would be very pleased to hear from you.
