Description

Job summary
University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust is looking to recruit a Consultant UGI Surgeon, with special interest in Upper Cancer surgery to commence in April 2027.

Based at the Royal Derby Hospital the UGI department provides a full range of out-patient diagnostic services and inpatient elective operating services for benign, bariatric and malignant disease as well as outpatient clinics and day case sessions. The department provides a full service to patients with Upper GI cancers across Derby-Burton and Bariatric services for the East Midlands, serving Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire.

There are currently 10 UGI consultants within the unit, supported by a team of resident doctors, clinical fellows and clinical nurse specialists.

The department has access to a 9 theatre inpatient suite and a 3 theatre Day Case facility. The inpatient theatre suite boasts two fully integrated laparoscopic theatres and the Trust offers Da Vinci Robotic cancer surgery in urology, colorectal, head and neck and UGI/HPB.

Main duties of the job
This post will be based across Royal Derby Hospital and with clinical activity also delivered at community sites across Derbyshire. The post holder will have a minimum 10 PA job plan including outpatient clinics, endoscopy, day case and inpatient operating as well as time for patient administration, ward rounds and supporting professional activities.

The post holder will provide emergency cover for general surgery (adults and paediatrics) as part of a 1 in 9 consultant day time rota and 1:18 nights and weekends rota.

Job responsibilities
  • Responsibility for the continuing care and treatment of patients in your charge and personal performance of clinical duties as agreed in your job plan, allowing for proper delegation to and teaching of trainee staff.
  • Provision of an out of hours general surgical service with consultant colleagues including on-call commitments.
  • Cover for consultant colleagues annual leave and other authorised absence, including care of patients and supervision of trainee doctors (a minimum of 6 weeks notice must be given for all leave requests).
  • Responsibility for the professional supervision, training and management of trainee medical staff, carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contributing to postgraduate and continuing medical education activity locally and nationally as appropriate.
  • Participation in medical audit under local arrangements, the Trusts Clinical Governance processes and in CPD.
  • Involvement in research and supervision of trainees in audit / research.
  • Managerial, including budgetary, responsibilities where appropriate.
  • Where it is agreed between the parties, work on behalf of the Trust such as domiciliary consultations, or services provided by the Trust for other agencies, e.g. the prison service. _(This excludes work done under direct arrangements between an individual Consultant & a third party, e.g. Category 2)_
  • Participation in Medical Student Teaching Programmes and Examinations.
  • Responsibility for implementing Infection Control Policies

Person Specification
Qualifications & Eligibility
Essential
  • MBBS / MBChB or equivalent
  • FRCS or equivalent higher qualification
  • Full GMC Registration with a license to practice at time of application
  • GMC Specialist Register for General Surgery Specialty OR within 6 months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at time of interview OR If applying for Full GMC Registration & Licence to Practice simultaneously with a CESR application, supporting documentary evidence must be provided at interview, to confirm an application has been submitted & is under consideration by the GMC.

Desirable
  • Additional higher medical/scientific degree relevant to the specialty

Clinical Knowledge and Skills
Essential
  • Adequate training and experience in UGI Surgery
  • Up to date clinical knowledge in the relevant specialty & evidence of an understanding of its application
  • Minimum 12 months NHS experience
  • Ability to manage UGI/General Surgery adult and paediatric emergency surgeries.

Teaching, Research & Audit
Essential
  • Evidence & experience of supervising and teaching resident doctors and medical students
  • Ability to & experience of teaching clinical skills
  • Evidence of relevant academic and research achievements relevant to the specialty
  • Experience of & commitment to clinical audit and/or Quality Improvement Projects (QIP)

Desirable
  • Specific teaching qualification
  • Experience of teaching basic clinical skills to under-graduates
  • Attended a recognised teaching training course
  • Ability to supervise research

Management Experience
Essential
  • Commitment to Continuing Professional Development & the requirements of clinical governance, reporting errors and learning from these

Desirable
  • Evidence of relevant academic and research achievements relevant to the specialty
  • Attended a management/leadership course

Language and Communciation Skills
Essential
  • Experience of formal presentations
  • Evidence of ability to work as part of an MDT, sharing administrative duties
  • Ability to direct & motivate team members
