Job summaryWe have a vacancy for an enthusiastic, well-motivated Admin Assistant to join our Team providing comprehensive secretarial support to the MECCS specialities teams at Royal Lancaster Infirmary. Current or recent administrative experience, is essential together with a good standard of English. Knowledge of medical terminology and IT systems would be an advantage, although training will be given.
You will be required to work flexibly, the successful candidate will possess excellent communication and organisational skills and have the ability to work well in a Team and adapt to change as required. The maintenance of patient confidentiality and excellent customer care skills are essential.
Main duties of the jobThis is an ideal opportunity for personal development enabling the post holder to develop their skills and knowledge working alongside medical and nursing staff within this busy, but friendly environment.
- Receiving and responding to telephone calls and queries from patients, general practitioners, Hospital Trust outpatient staff, Medical secretaries and other support staff in relation to outpatient appointments.
- Inviting patients, in chronological order, for clinical outpatient sessions with clinician's booking rules, mutually agreeing an appropriate date and time with the patient and sending confirmation of appointment to the patient.
- Entering data and updating confidential information onto the hospital patient administration system - Lorenzo.
- General administration and clerical duties as and when required, supporting the Team Leaders, the Specialty Secretaries, Consultants and their teams.
About usWe operate from three main hospitals - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community health care premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.
FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.
WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.
All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Person SpecificationEducation and qualificationsEssential- GCSE Maths and English or equivalent
- Audio typewriting or equivalent qualification or experience
Desirable- Previous Admin or Secretarial experience
ExperienceEssential- Previous NHS administration and/or secretarial experience
- Audio typing experience
Desirable- Experience of working with a digital dictating system
Skills, ability and knowledgeEssential- Knowledge of data protection and the requirement for confidentiality
