Job summaryWe are looking for highly skilled and experienced midwife to join our multidisciplinary team for maternity leave cover. The successful candidate will need to be able to provide outstanding, personalised and compassionate care to women and their babies, and at the same time foster an exceptional learning environment for midwives and medical staff.
You will have a sound clinical knowledge base and a passion for midwifery and physiological birth. We are looking for someone who understands the role of managing a team of passionate midwives and maternity support workers and appreciates the demands of the wider maternity service. You will be responsible for the development and management of the individuals within the team, ensuring high standards of midwifery and obstetric-led care to meet the requirements of women, birthing people and their families at all times. You should have significant labour ward experience, be able to work on your own initiative and be able to contribute to the wider multidisciplinary team.

In undertaking this role, all employees will be expected to behave at all times in a way that is consistent with and actively supports.
- Professional accountability for the effective delivery of labour, birth and postnatal care
- Provide managerial and clinical guidance .
- Provide a visible, accessible and authoritative presence, acting as a professional role model by providing leadership and support within the multidisciplinary and midwifery teams.
- Support, assist and advise women and their families' . Ensure there is an emphasis on safety for all women with a continued promotion of excellence in care, early labour, intrapartum and postpartum care.
About usWe operate from three main hospitals - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community health care premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.
FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.
WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.
All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Person SpecificationEducation and qualificationsEssential- Registered midwife
- First degree or evidence of significant post registration education
DesirableExperienceEssential- Significant all round midwifery experience.
- Evidence of previous ward management experience
Desirable- Understanding of ward dynamics and budget
skills, ability and knowledgeEssential- A good understanding of the role of the Professional Midwifery Advocacy
- A good understanding of national policies and guidelines- clinical skills/CNST/MBRACE
- Evidence of understanding of key components of team leadership and management
- Knowledge of Trust policy - sickness etc.
- Philosophies of care for low and high risk women
- Achievements in all clinical competencies
