Job summary
The Band 5 Staff Nurse provides direct patient care within the Emergency Department, delivering assessment, treatment and ongoing monitoring of patients with urgent and emergency healthcare needs. The role is essential to maintaining safe staffing levels, patient safety and the effective delivery of emergency care services.

The Band 5 Staff Nurse is responsible for delivering high-quality, evidence-based nursing care to patients presenting to the Emergency Department with a wide range of urgent and emergency healthcare needs. The post holder will assess, plan, implement and evaluate care, working as part of the multidisciplinary team to ensure safe, effective and compassionate patient care.

The role involves supporting patient flow through the department, recognising and responding to deteriorating patients, undertaking clinical procedures, administering medications and maintaining accurate clinical documentation. The post holder will contribute to maintaining patient safety, achieving departmental objectives and delivering high standards of emergency care.

The Band 5 Staff Nurse is expected to work autonomously within their scope of practice while seeking support and guidance from senior colleagues when required. They will also contribute to the education and support of students, newly recruited staff and healthcare support workers.

Main duties of the job
  • Assess, plan, implement and evaluate nursing care for patients presenting with a wide range of urgent and emergency healthcare needs.
  • Undertake patient assessment, monitoring and reassessment, identifying and escalating deteriorating patients as required.
  • Deliver safe, effective and compassionate patient care in accordance with the NMC Code, Trust policies and evidence-based practice.
  • Administer medications, intravenous therapies and other treatments within scope of practice.
  • Undertake clinical procedures and maintain competency in emergency nursing skills.
  • Maintain accurate, timely and comprehensive patient records and documentation.
  • Work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to ensure high standards of patient care.
  • Support effective patient flow through the Emergency Department, including admissions, transfers and discharges.
  • Promote and maintain patient safety, safeguarding and infection prevention and control standards.
  • Participate in audits, incident reporting, quality improvement initiatives and service developments.
  • Support and supervise healthcare support workers, students and newly appointed staff.
  • Maintain professional registration, mandatory training and continuing professional development.
  • Contribute to the achievement of departmental objectives and the delivery of high-quality emergency care services.

About us
We operate from three main hospitals - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, daycase and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Our Community Service for adults are provided in people's homes, community centres, clinics, GP Practices, community hospitals. Our aim is to work with people to help them remain independent, improve their health and manage their conditions through high quality care, advice and support.

Job responsibilities
The Band 5 Staff Nurse is a key member of the Emergency Department team, responsible for providing safe, compassionate and effective care to patients with urgent and emergency healthcare needs. The role supports the delivery of high-quality emergency services through clinical excellence, teamwork, effective communication and a commitment to continuous improvement. Assess, plan, implement and evaluate individualised patient care. Deliver safe, effective and compassionate nursing care to patients with urgent and emergency healthcare needs. Undertake nursing assessments and formulate appropriate plans of care. Monitor patients' condition and promptly recognise and escalate deterioration. Prioritise care according to patient acuity and clinical need. Administer medications, intravenous therapies, blood products and other prescribed treatments in accordance with Trust policies. Perform clinical procedures and maintain competence in emergency nursing skills. Ensure patients receive appropriate pain management and comfort measures. Support patients and relatives throughout their Emergency Department journey. Communicate effectively with patients, relatives and carers. Work collaboratively with medical, nursing and allied health professional colleagues. Participate in clinical handovers and multidisciplinary discussions. Liaise with wards, community teams and external agencies to support continuity of care. Maintain professional and therapeutic relationships with patients and colleagues. Support the efficient flow of patients through the Emergency Department. Assist with admissions, transfers and discharges. Prioritise workload within a fast-paced and unpredictable environment. Escalate capacity, staffing and patient safety concerns appropriately. Contribute to achieving departmental performance standards and targets. Maintain accurate, timely and legally compliant patient records. Complete electronic documentation and patient care records appropriately. Ensure confidentiality is maintained at all times. Comply with information governance and data protection requirements. Act professionally in accordance with the NMC Code. Demonstrate accountability for own practice and decision-making. Act as a positive role model for colleagues and students. Support healthcare support workers and learners in the clinical environment. Participate in appraisals, clinical supervision and reflective practice. Maintain NMC registration and professional competence. Complete all mandatory and statutory training requirements. Participate in continuing professional development activities. Support the induction and development of new staff, students and apprentices. Keep up to date with developments in emergency nursing practice.

Person Specification
Essential
  • NMC qualification is essential.

Desirable
  • ED experience preferred but not essential.
