Job summaryThe Paediatric Advanced Practitioner role in the paediatric Emergency department supports the assessment, diagnosis, and ongoing management of children and young people across emergency paediatric pathways. The post holder will practise autonomously within their scope of competence, working collaboratively with medical, nursing, and allied health professionals to support safe, effective, and timely care.
This post is suited to clinicians committed to maintaining high standards of paediatric care and contributing to the development of emergency and acute paediatrics and advanced practice within the UHP.
Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as 'Priority' and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.Main duties of the job- Work in accordance with the Multi-professional Framework for Advanced Clinical Practice in England (HEE, 2017) and University Hospitals Plymouth (UHP) Trust Policy for Advanced Practice
- Utilise advanced clinical skills to ensure that patients within Emergency Paediatrics receive holistic, timely and high-quality care
- Exercise clinical expertise, high levels of judgement, discretion, and decision- making in care, in accordance with their scope of practice
- Draw on expertise utilising the four pillars of advanced practice to lead and influence improvements to standards of care
- Develop a culture of organisational learning to inspire future and existing staf
- Influence and lead on the improvement of care though clinical governance, audit, quality improvement and research in collaboration with clinical and academic colleagues.
- Demonstrate compassionate leadership in daily working
- Facilitates multidisciplinary education for all members of the Emergency Paediatric team

Job responsibilitiesClinical:
- To deliver and participate in the clinical care of all Paediatric patients attending the Emergency Department (Minors, Resus and Paediatrics).
- Provide a level of advanced and comprehensive nursing assessment based on a specialist body of knowledge.
- Direct responsibility for the management of patients within own caseload and supervision/development of junior members of the multidisciplinary team.
- To appropriately assess, examine, investigate, diagnose and treat patients, resulting in the safe management and appropriate referral or discharge of patients with undifferentiated and undiagnosed presentations.
- Order/ interpret investigations, laboratory tests, x-rays and act on results as appropriate,
- Initiate drug therapy/medication within the parameters of agreed clinical guidelines and in accordance with present legislation supply and prescribing of medicines.
- To play an active role in the development/ improvement and audit of processes that facilitates and improve patient flow.
- Maintain own clinical development by keeping abreast of new treatments and technologies within emergency and unscheduled care.
- To improve the quality of the patient experience by identifying and meeting the individual clinical needs of patients.

Person SpecificationQualificationsEssential- Proven NMC registration/registered nurse.
- Education/Mentorship Course or willingness to complete
- Independent non-medical prescribing, if from a core profession in which NMP is supported
- Completion of MSc In Advanced Practice or equivalent (as defined by Trust AP policy)
- Evidence of relevant, recent study continuing education
Desirable- Management/ Leadership training.
- RCEM Credentialled Paediatric ACP
- Minor Injury/Illness assessment modules at level 6 or 7.
- Teaching qualification
Knowledge and ExperienceEssential- Extensive, recent demonstrable experience within clinical Paediatric practice.
- Proven Management ability and leadership demonstrable experience
- Excellent clinical and practical skills with demonstrable experience
- Demonstrable experience of education and supervision
- Proven advanced Clinical skills, cannulation/venepuncture etc.
- Proven extensive demonstrable experience at trainee ACP level
- Evidence of practice within the four pillars of Advanced Practice.
Desirable- Information technology skills
Aptitude and AbilitiesEssential- Proven ability to recognise and analyse complex situations and take appropriate action.
- Independent and autonomous practice as an ACP in Paed ED within departmental frameworks
- Proven ability to communicate effectively both in written and verbal form
- Willingness to develop the regional and national profile of advanced practice.
- Excellent consultation and clinical examination skill.
- Proven ability to compile protocols and clinical guidelines.
- Proven ability to communicate with patient in an empathetic manner regarding their treatment and procedures.
