Job summary
We are seeking a Band 6 Biomedical Scientist with point of care (POCT) experience to join our team supporting services across UHP , Community Hospitals/CDC's , virtual wards and secondary care.

BMS candidates will have HCPC registration , in possession of a specialist diploma from the IBMS in POCT or able to demonstrate significant specialist knowledge, skill and experience in POCT.

This is an exiting opportunity to join a POCT team to contribute to service development , support expansion of POCT services in an established , technically advanced POCT service.

Covering a large portfolio of POCT devices you will play a role in defining and supporting services to enhance and streamline patient pathways across acute, emergency , virtual ward, UTC and community settings.

Working with clinical/POCT teams, you will help ensure services are delivered safely, effectively and in accordance with regulatory and accreditation requirements.

Demonstrable experience of quality management/governance of POCT services to support the departmental goal to achieve ISO 15189 accreditation would be an essential attribute.

Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as 'Priority' and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.

Main duties of the job
The post supports:

• Timely and accurate POCT results for patient care
• Specialist operation, maintenance and troubleshooting of POCT equipment
• POCT quality assurance, governance in line with accreditation compliance standards (ISO 15189)
• Training, competency assessment and supervision of POCT users and junior POCT staff
• Ongoing professional development with CPD practice to a specialist level
• Development, and implementation of service improvement initiatives
• Verification and validation of POCT devices, systems and processes

Job responsibilities
Key Dimensions:

• Trustwide POCT service supporting multiple clinical areas both within the trust and the wider primary and secondary care services
• Joint responsibility for maintenance and upkeep for POCT analysers, middleware and connectivity systems
• Frequent requirement to work autonomously across clinical areas
• Exposure to blood, body fluids and biohazards
• Requirement for prolonged concentration and adherence to SOPs
• Travel between Trust POCT locations and within primary/secondary and community care as required
• Requirement to interpret QC/EQA performance and act accordingly

Person Specification
Knowledge & Experience
Essential

• Demonstrable post-registration experience as a BMS in POCT settings
• Demonstrable experience of audit, quality management systems and incident investigation in POCT
• Proven understanding of QC/EQA processes

Desirable

• Demonstrable experience with POCT middleware, connectivity or LIMS
• Demonstrable experience in POCT service development or implementation

Qualifications
Essential

• State registration with Health Care Professions Council as a Biomedical Scientist
• Successful completion of IBMS Specialist Portfolio in POCT or extensive demonstratable experience in POCT
• Educated to BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Sciences or a degree acceptable to the Institute of Biomedical Sciences and the Heath Care Professions Council

Desirable

• IBMS Specialist portfolio in any discipline

Aptitude and Abilities
Essential

• Excellent communication and influencing skills
• Ability to analyse complex data and apply specialist knowledge
• Ability to plan, prioritise and coordinate workload and staff

• Competence in POCT specific IT systems
• Demonstrable experience managing change or improvement project
