Job summaryApplications are invited from a highly self-motivated, enthusiastic, suitably qualified and experienced candidates to join the Microbiology team, in the role of Senior Specialist Biomedical Scientist - Health and Safety Officer. Applicants must be HCPC registered, have a postgraduate qualification in a relevant subject or Fellowship of the IBMS with extensive post registration experience in a routine diagnostic microbiology laboratory. We will accept applications from anyone who is within 3 months of completing a formal postgraduate qualification. Applicants must be prepared to work and attend meetings at any site.
Main duties of the jobAn advanced scientific knowledge of Microbiology services along with the ability to demonstrate extensive experience of staff support, training, development and supervision is essential.
An extensive knowledge and awareness of the requirements of HSE and UKAS and other health and safety / quality management standards is essential.
The successful candidate will act as part of the senior quality and compliance team and as Health and Safety Officer for Microbiology.

Job responsibilitiesThis role is eligible for visa sponsorship under the UK Visas & Immigration (UKVI) Skilled Worker route however sponsorship can only be provided where applicants meet the specific requirements set by UKVI, including the relevant skill and salary thresholds (£25000), and any role-specific criteria.
The post-holder will serve as a departmental lead for local health and safety issues providing support, specialist knowledge and scientific/technical expertise on all health and safety matters to ensure the safe delivery of the clinical diagnostic service.
The post-holder will be responsible for the local delivery of the UHSussex Pathology health and safety management system. This will include facilitating the delivery of specialist training and systematic inspection programmes for all staff grades.
QualificationsEssential- Postgraduate qualification (or completing within 3 months) or equivalent
- Post Registration Experience NHS Microbiology Laboratory (5+years)
- HCPC registration
- MSc/Mphil(Master of Science or Philosophy) or equivalent & FIBMS.
Desirable- Post Registration Experience In NHS Virology Lab
- Health and Safety Qualification
