Job summary

Sonographer 2 Days per Week

Are you a Sonographer who is passionate about delivering high-quality NHS services and looking for a part-time role that offers a great worklife balance?

Vernova Healthcare is seeking an enthusiastic and self-motivated Sonographer to join our small, friendly ultrasound team for 2 days per week. Our priority is to provide a patient-focused NHS service, delivering safe, effective, and efficient care within local community settings.

Ultrasound clinics are delivered across the following Eastern Cheshire sites using newly replaced GE ultrasound equipment:
  • Macclesfield Health Hub & East Cheshire Trust
  • Knutsford & District Community Hospital
  • Congleton Memorial Hospital
  • Handforth Clinic

The successful applicant will work independently across these sites while also being part of a supportive multidisciplinary team. Our Healthcare Assistants are valued members of the service and provide support throughout all ultrasound sessions.

We are committed to fostering effective communication and engagement, with regular service and clinical meetings, peer review, audit, and feedback to support continuous professional development and the delivery of high-quality patient care.

Main duties of the job
Working as part of a small but experienced team, you will report directly to the Lead Sonographer. Your remit will be to be independently responsible for carrying out and reporting on non-obstetric ultrasound examinations to a high standard, in line with local and national guidelines. Holding a CASE accredited ultrasound qualification (PgCert, PgDip) you must be eligible to work in the United Kingdom with HCPC/NMC/ equivalent registration. The successful candidate will have excellent clinical skills and experience in general, gynaecological and superficial/small parts scanning. MSK and/or head and neck experience would also be an advantage but not essential.

Job responsibilities
  • Undertake a range of ultrasound examinations in accordance with local, regional, and national guidelines.
  • Assess the suitability of examination referrals and prioritise appointments according to clinical urgency.
  • Provide high standards of patient care within a safe, clean, and professional working environment.
  • Perform general abdominal, pelvic, selected small parts, and MSK ultrasound examinations (where appropriately trained) across various community sites within Eastern Cheshire.
  • Work independently and autonomously, providing diagnostic ultrasound examinations to a high clinical standard, including accurate interpretation and production of timely clinical reports for all examinations undertaken.
  • Use the CRIS system for hot reporting of all examinations in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Work collaboratively as part of a small, supportive team and actively contribute to clinical governance, audit, quality improvement programmes, and service development.
  • Deliver appropriate, sensitive, and individualised patient care at all times, ensuring a positive patient experience.
  • Undertake ultrasound examinations as an autonomous practitioner, maintaining professional accountability and adhering to relevant standards and guidelines.
  • Maintain and develop professional and technical knowledge, skills, and expertise through continuous professional development (CPD), maintaining an up-to-date portfolio of evidence.
  • Work in accordance with Vernova Healthcare's core values, promoting compassionate care and ensuring patients, relatives, and carers receive an excellent standard of service.
  • Maintain professional registration and accreditation requirements at all times.
  • Participate fully in clinical governance processes, including contributing to investigations of complaints, incidents, and significant events, in accordance with organisational policies and procedures.

Person Specification
Experience
Essential
  • Experience working as a Sonographer within an NHS or equivalent healthcare setting.
  • Extensive experience of independent clinical practice in diagnostic ultrasound.
  • Evidence of ongoing continuing professional development (CPD) and maintenance of professional knowledge and skills.
  • Ability to provide effective feedback, communicate clearly, and build positive working relationships with a wide range of individuals.
  • Demonstrable understanding of the principles, practice, and application of diagnostic sonography.
Desirable
  • Experience in musculoskeletal ultrasound and/or head and neck ultrasound.
  • Evidence of knowledge and understanding of multi-modality imaging practices.
  • Awareness of current developments, priorities, and initiatives within the NHS.
  • Experience of delivering ultrasound services within a community healthcare setting.

Qualifications
Essential
  • BSc (Hons) in Diagnostic Imaging or DCR Postgraduate Diploma in Medical Ultrasound (or equivalent recognised qualification).
  • Current registration with the relevant professional regulatory body (HCPC).
Desirable
  • Additional modular qualification, modules or training.
