Job summary
I'm excited to offer this opportunity to a forward thinking and proactive Clinical Psychologist.

We work in a very person-centered way and people with learning disabilities and their families are at the center entre of what we do. To achieve this, we carry out joint assessments, share our professional knowledge and work in partnership with key parts of the local health and care system.

You will provide direct clinical assessments, formulations interventions to individuals and will have active support from the principal Lead Clinical Psychologist.

In 2021, the service was nationally recognised and received a 'highly commended' accolade from the National Pharmacy Awards. In 2022 we reached the finals at the National Learning Disability and Autism Awards and later that year received the Trust's 'Outstanding Clinical Team of the year. More recently in 2025, we were recognised for 'Outstanding Patient Experience' from our Speech & language therapists and nationally, from the 'Beyond Words' charity for the 'Most Inspirational Outcome'. In May 2026, the service received the local 'Team of the Month' in recognition of the outstanding work we undertake.

Main duties of the job
Work as an integral member of the Learning Disability Team, holding responsibility for a designated caseload of adults with learning disabilities who present with complex mental health, behavioural, neurodevelopmental and emotional needs. Positively advocate for the rights, inclusion and wellbeing of people with learning disabilities, addressing health inequalities and improving access to statutory, voluntary and community services.

Provide highly specialised psychological assessment, formulation and evidence-based interventions tailored to individual cognitive, communication and sensory needs. Offer specialist consultation to multidisciplinary colleagues, families and support providers to inform person-centred care planning, risk management. Undertake safeguarding, mental capacity and risk assessments in line with relevant legislation and professional standards. Deliver training, supervision and reflective practice, contribute to service development, audit, research and quality improvement, and maintain accurate clinical records, reports and outcome measures

Qualifications
Essential

• Doctoral level training in Clinical Psychology, including specifically models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics and neuropsychology, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology
• Registered with the HCPC (live registration)
• Active registration and membership of the PBS

Experience
Essential

• Evidence of working with people with learning disabilities, mental health issues, autism, challenging behaviour and physical disabilities
• Experience of specialist psychological assessment, formulation and treatment of clients across the full range of care settings
• Experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, across the whole life course and presenting difficulties that reflect the full range of clinical severity
• Experience of planning or conducting research/ audit

Desirable

• Experience of providing teaching & training and/or supervision
• Experience of working within a multi-cultural framework

Knowledge & skills
Essential

• Skills in the use of complex methods of specialist assessment (including psychometric assessment) frequently requiring sustained and intense concentration
• Evidence of a high level of communication skills (both written and verbal) and the ability to impart highly technical and/or clinically sensitive information to clients, their families, carers and other professional colleagues both within and outside the NHS
• Evidence of an understanding of the specific needs and difficulties of people with learning disabilities including those additional needs such as autism, mental health issues, challenging behaviour and physical disabilities
• Ability to train or teach others using a variety of complex multi-media material suitable for presentations within public, professional and academic settings
• Doctoral level knowledge of research methodology, research design and data analysis and the ability to undertake regular service audits, evaluation or research

• Ability to work as a part of a team and to integrate within a multidisciplinary team (internal and multi-agency basis)

• Evidence of multidisciplinary and multi-agency working and demonstration of an understanding of the skills required within such settings

Other
Essential

• Ability to accept and use supervision appropriately and effectively within evidence-based practice
• Able to comply with local and Trust policies, SOPs and practices, information governance and record keeping practices
• Careful use of supplies and equipment (e.g. assessment tools)
• Competent skills in computers and software packages e.g. word, excel, power pointer, SPSS etc
• Ability to manage potentially unpleasant conditions which may require physical, mental and emotional effort including frequent concentration
