Description

Job summary
Olympus Health is looking for a Consultant Dermatologist to be the clinical lead for our community dermatology service and to deliver consultant clinics within it.

Main duties of the job
You will set the clinical standards, pathways and triage rules for the service, supervise the wider clinical team, and see and treat patients yourself, including minor skin surgery and diagnostic biopsies.

About us
Olympus Health, "the home of healthcare", is based in Leicestershire and provides NHS services in the community, free at the point of service, with a focus on dermatology, vasectomy and minor surgery. We work with local hospitals and specialists to deliver fast, clinically led, high-quality care close to home, and we are expanding across the UK.

Job responsibilities
  • Run consultant dermatology clinics in the community for routine adult referrals aged 18 and over, for new and follow-up patients.
  • Diagnose and manage general dermatology conditions, including long-term follow-up of complex skin conditions and patients on specialist therapies.
  • Review complex, uncertain or escalated cases referred by GPwERs and other clinicians in the service.
  • Triage referrals received through NHS e-RS or a local referral support service, where the commissioner requires one, including teledermatology referrals, and return referrals that fall outside the acceptance criteria.
  • Perform minor skin surgery in a suitable procedure room, including diagnostic skin biopsies punch, shave and incisional, excision of benign and low-risk lesions, curettage and cautery, and cryotherapy.
  • Make sure every procedure has documented informed consent, a safety check before the procedure, and appropriate infection prevention and control.
  • Send all excised tissue for histology unless there is a clear clinical reason not to, and track every sample to a result.
  • Where cancer is confirmed after a biopsy or excision, refer the patient straight away to the appropriate consultant or skin cancer MDT.
  • Act as clinical lead for the community dermatology service.
  • Write and maintain the clinical model: referral and acceptance criteria, exclusion criteria, triage rules, pathways and discharge criteria.
  • Work with the Head of Operations so that clinic capacity, booking rules and the Referral Hub reflect the clinical pathways.
  • Lead clinical audit, including diagnostic accuracy, skin cancer detection, histology outcomes, minor surgery complication and infection rates, and patient outcomes.
  • Make sure histology results are tracked, acted on and communicated to patients and GPs, with a failsafe for every sample.
  • Train and mentor GPwERs and nurses, including supporting GPwER accreditation where needed.
  • Provide education to local GPs, for example on referral quality, dermoscopy and skin cancer recognition.

Person Specification
Essential
  • Competent and current in dermatological minor surgery, including skin biopsies, excisions, curettage and cautery, and cryotherapy; sound knowledge of consent and infection control for procedures
  • Skilled in dermoscopy and the diagnosis of skin cancer; sound knowledge of NICE guidance and urgent suspected cancer pathways
  • Experience managing complex inflammatory skin disease, including prescribing systemic and biologic therapies, and isotretinoin in line with MHRA guidance
  • Substantive or recent consultant-level practice in dermatology in the NHS
  • Able to triage referrals and give advice and guidance remotely
  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practise, and on the GMC Specialist Register for dermatology
  • Experience leading clinical teams and setting clinical standards
Desirable
  • Experience setting up or leading minor surgery lists in a community setting
  • Skin cancer MDT membership or experience; Mohs or advanced skin surgery experience
  • Experience with patch testing and phototherapy (UVB and PUVA) services
  • Experience working in or leading a community or intermediate dermatology service
  • Experience setting up or running a teledermatology service
  • Formal clinical lead role; experience supervising or accrediting GPwERs
