Job summaryThe Breast Services department is strongly supported by a Lead Breast Specialist Nurse and Specialist Nurses in Primary and Secondary Breast Cancer, as well as an Surgical Care Practitioners. There is also a dedicated Breast Clinical Governance and Risk Management Lead.
We offer a wide range of Oncoplastic Breast Surgery, Including Implant based reconstruction, Therapeutic Mammoplasty. Latissimus Dorsi Flap reconstruction, Local artery perforator flap surgery and both wire and magseed guided surgery.
There are weekly countywide MDT meetings for the Breast Cancer, which are well supported by the MDT coordinators, specialist nurses, Histopathology, Radiology and Oncology Consultants.
There are close links between the Plastic Surgery Department at the university Hospital of Coventry and Warwickshire and the other Directorates within the Trust.
Main duties of the jobDUTIES OF THE POST
- Under the guidance of the consultants, the post holder will be responsible for the clinical care of Breast patients.
- There is not expectation of on call
- To assist in Breast Out-patient clinics
- Perform Breast surgery within his/her capability sometimes without supervision and if difficulties arise beyond his/her competence to consult the relevant or on call Consultant.
- To be responsible for the maintenance of proper case records and investigations on patients, and correspondence with General Practitioners and others as required
- Duties will be arranged with the consultant to whom you are responsible, and you must discuss and understand these duties as soon as possible as you take up your appointment. The Consultant has final responsibility for all patients under his/her care and therefore any clinical problems causing concern should be referred to the Consultant, as the senior member of your team, or in his/her absence, the Consultant covering his/her duties.

Job responsibilitiesThis job description, together with the Capabilities Framework, will be reviewed annually and agreed with the Clinical Director and Divisional Director, on behalf of the Chief Medical Officer, to ensure that it continually reflects the areas of work, clinical responsibility of the post and purchaser requirements.
A suitably experienced post-holder will be expected to:
- provide a service to patients of the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, General Practitioners and to attend multi-disciplinary meetings. The successful candidate will be expected to work within multi-disciplinary team in providing high quality clinical care. It is anticipated work will be undertaken on three sites and closer to the patient's home. The Trust is seeking to extend services to GP surgeries/health centres etc and rotas may be revised in due course.
- be responsible for the continuing care and treatment of patients in their charge and personal performance of clinical duties.
- provide support to the A&E department and acute medicine to ensure timely appropriate care and patient flow through the hospital.
- attend Consultant ward rounds and triage ward referrals.
- prepare patients for planned treatment and procedures, including post-operative care as required.
- provide consultation and advisory service to clinical colleagues in the Trust and Primary Care, including discharge summaries.
- attend multi-disciplinary meetings where requested, which may be cross county and cross site.
- collaborate with colleagues to deliver a high quality, timely service and to work towards meeting the Trust's and departmental objectives.
- provide professional supervision, training and management of junior medical staff, carrying out teaching, assessment and accreditation duties as required and contributing to postgraduate and CPD activity locally and nationally as appropriate.
- participate in the middle grade on call rota to ensure that both emergency and urgent services are provided out of normal hours, to be shared equally with colleagues in post.
- if undertaking non-resident on-call duties, attend the hospital site to review patients when clinically necessary. You must be prepared to attend willingly whenever requested to do so by a member of their medical and nursing team.
- participate in clinical audit as part of quality improvement activity under local arrangements.
- commit to taking part in annual appraisal process which will be undertaken by a trust approved appraiser.
- be responsible for compliance with personal continuing professional development requirements with the support of the Trust. It is mandatory for all Specialists to keep up to date with evidence based practice.
- be responsible for maintaining awareness of & acting in accordance with professional guidelines such as Duties of a Doctor, Good Medical Practice, & the GMC Performance Procedures.

- Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required at CT/ST5 level in relevant specialty. Equivalent years' experience in a relevant specialty from other medical grades including from overseas will also be accepted.
- Experience of working in multidisciplinary teams.
- Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of problems, both emergency and elective, within specialty and sufficient experience.
- Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients.
Desirable- Previous experience working in the NHS within the specialty of minimum of 12 months.
- Ability to use the evidence based and clinical audit to support decision making.
- A specialist Oncoplastic Breast Training course.
- A specialist Breast Training course in non-reconstructive breast surgical principles.
- Advanced Communications course (& or cancer communications-based course).
QualificationsEssential- Eligible for full GMC Registration with a Licence to practise at the time of appointment.
- MB ChB, MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
- Satisfactory completion of ST3-5 training, or equivalent.
- 12 Months of Specialist Breast Surgery Training at ST3-8 level.
- Membership examination with the relevant UK Royal College.
- ALS Certification.
- ATLS Certification.
Desirable- Higher degree.
- Attendance at recognised management courses.
- Formal qualification in teaching/education.
