Description

Barts Health NHS Trust
CESR Fellow (eqv to ST3-5) in Emergency Medicine

The CESR or "Portfolio" Pathway is an alternative pathway for entry onto the GMC Specialist Register for Emergency Medicine to the Emergency Medicine (EM) Training Programme. Applicants need to demonstrate that they have the knowledge, skills and experience required to practice as an EM Consultant in the UK. The registrar cohort of resident doctors currently includes both EM trainees and those on the Portfolio Pathway and we are looking to expand our numbers of the latter.

We are looking for doctors with at least 2 years clinical experience in Emergency Medicine +/- allied acute care jobs and evidence of completion of Foundation Training or equivalent. All posts are for an initial 24 months with a view to extend as required for portfolio completion. Successful applicants will work as a Registrar ST3/ ST4+ level in the Emergency Department at Newham Hospital.

This post would suit either a UK candidate who has already completed the ACCS Training Programme (or equivalent) seeking entry onto the Specialist Register via an alternative pathway or an international candidate with significant experience in Emergency Medicine (e.g. completion of a training programme) wishing to consolidate their skills and apply for entry on the Specialist Register in the UK.

Main duties of the job
You will have a named Consultant Educational Supervisor and will be expected to maintain regular contact with them during your post. You will be supported in delivering your e-portfolio keeping up to date with GMC required appraisal and revalidation.

At the start of the post a training needs assessment will be undertaken. During the first year in post there will be opportunity to work on leadership and management of adult emergency patients, plus ring-fenced time in the Paediatric Emergency Department to develop paediatric competencies (if required).

Depending on personal development needs and satisfactory progression, there is opportunity from the second year to undertake secondments outside of the emergency department. The department has been able to secure training opportunities in anaesthetics and ICU at Newham Hospital to which the CESR Registrars rotate in turn. The duration of the secondment may vary but will generally be between 3- and 6-months WTE in each specialty.

Study leave is encouraged, targeting the required resuscitation courses, as well as numerous simulation courses delivered within Barts Health (such as paediatric emergencies, sedation, USS, trauma team leaders, managing miscarriage, acute psychiatric emergencies, nerve blocks).
