As a Band 5 you will be caring for critically ill children with the support of senior staff, to allow you to enhance your skills. You will need to be adaptable to the changing pace of clinical care; enjoy learning and participating in team work.

Main duties of the jobTo provide effective family centred nursing care to patients and their families. To ensure that evidence based practice is performed at all times, taking responsibility for updating own knowledge and skill in line with Trust policies and procedures and NMC code of professional conduct. For newly qualified band 5 nurses, it will be an important step in consolidating practice and completing all relevant clinical competencies, receiving adequate support from colleagues.

Person SpecificationQualificationsEssential- On part 1 sub part 1 of NMC Registration
- Possession of or working towards degree
- BLS course
Desirable- Assessing and mentoring qualification
- HDU course or relevant acute skills course
ExperienceEssential- Awareness of working with children/families within a multi cultural environment
- Previous involvement in/ knowledge of child protection process & procedures
Desirable- Experience of having worked with acutely sick children.
- Experience in a relevant unit. (NICU, HDU, PICU, Theatres, A&E, tertiary unit, surgery/medicine).
- Currently working within HDU/PICU
- Experience of supervising and assessing students
- Experience of caring for children requiring ventilation e.g. CPAP/Bipap
SkillsEssential- Ability to plan and prioritise care of patients
- Ability to work well both in a team and on own initiative
- Ability to work in partnership with members of the Multi disciplinary team
- Excellent documentation skills
Desirable- IV Drug Administration & Central venous access management
- Knowledge of Gastrostomy & tracheostomy care
- Ability to recognise potential unsafe situations and take appropriate steps.
- Demonstration, commitment to teaching self development and clinical supervision.
- Ability to use IT system and understand importance of information.
