Job summary
Are you an experienced Registered Nurse with a passion for cancer care and clinical research?

Bolton NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a motivated, compassionate and highly organised Band 6 Clinical Research Nurse to join our expanding Research Delivery Team, supporting the delivery of innovative cancer research studies that improve outcomes for patients today and shape treatments for the future.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced nurse who has worked with cancer patients and within a clinical research environment to play a pivotal role in the delivery of portfolio cancer studies. You will manage research participants throughout their trial journey, ensuring the highest standards of patient care, safety, governance and regulatory compliance.

Working closely with multidisciplinary teams, Principal Investigators and external study sponsors, you will help bring cutting-edge treatments and interventions to patients across Bolton NHS Foundation Trust.

If you are passionate about delivering outstanding patient-centred care, have excellent communication skills, and thrive in a fast-paced research environment, we would love to hear from you.

Main duties of the job
As a Clinical Research Nurse, you will:
  • Coordinate and manage a portfolio of cancer clinical research studies from study set-up through to close-down and archiving.
  • Identify, screen, recruit and retain eligible patients into clinical research studies, ensuring recruitment targets are achieved.
  • Obtain informed consent from patients in accordance with study protocols, GCP standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Deliver protocol-specific care and assessments to patients participating in cancer research studies.
  • Act as the key point of contact and advocate for patients throughout their research journey.
  • Monitor patient safety, assess and report adverse events, and escalate concerns appropriately.
  • Work collaboratively with oncologists, haematologists, research teams and other healthcare professionals to ensure seamless study delivery.
  • Maintain accurate and timely research documentation and data entry across all research systems.
  • Support monitoring visits, audits and inspections, ensuring compliance with ICH-GCP, Trust policies and research governance standards.
  • Contribute to the education and development of colleagues, promoting research awareness across clinical teams.
  • Champion a culture of research excellence, innovation and continuous improvement.

About us
We have a long and proud history of caring for generations of local people and can trace our roots all the way back to 1814 with the first hospital in Bolton - the Bolton Dispensary in the town centre.

Bolton NHS Foundation Trust was formed in 2008 and, in 2011, we became an integrated provider with community health services joining the trust. Covering a catchment area that also incorporates parts of Bury, Wigan and Salford, we deliver hospital and community based services from the Royal Bolton Hospital in Farnworth and from 20 health centres across Bolton, to a catchment population of 310,000+ people.

The Royal Bolton Hospital is a major hub within Greater Manchester for women's and children's services and is the busiest single ambulance-receiving site in Greater Manchester. We're structured in four clinical divisions - Community Services, Families and Diagnostics, Medicine, and Surgery and are led by a Board of Directors. As an NHS Foundation Trust we're accountable to our members and have a Council of Governors to represent the views of patients, public, staff and partners.

Buildings, names and models of care have changed over the centuries, but one thing has remained constant and is prevalent among our 6,718 staff members: the enduring commitment to providing the best health and care for the people of Bolton.
