Job summary
Band 6 to Band 7 development opportunity. The Paediatric Epilepsy Specialist Nurse will act as an autonomous practitioner with responsibility for providing specialist nursing skills, knowledge and expertise in the care and management of Children & Young People (CYP) in the community setting. The post holder will be a designated non-medical prescriber and act as an advocate for patients at all times whilst safeguarding the delivery of high standards of care, in line with the Nursing and Midwifery Council Code (NMC) and national and local guidance in relation to paediatric epilepsy care. Whilst striving to initiate the development of nurse-led initiatives that enable children to be cared for at home as an alternative to hospital. They will manage a patient caseload and use advanced clinical judgement and autonomous decision making about specialist care and management of patients to formulate clinical management plans. The specialist practitioner will act as a link between primary and secondary care and will lead supervise, educate, train and develop the workforce within the area of responsibility in relation to paediatric epilepsy nursing. The nurse specialist will be accountable and responsible for the effective use of resources. The post holder will be expected to attend and complete appropriate external training as part of their role to be able to progress to Band 7 Epilepsy specialist Nurse

Main duties of the job
As a Specialist Epilepsy Nurse, the role involves managing a complex caseload, providing expert nursing care to individuals with a diagnosis of epilepsy. The nurse leads on epilepsy education. They support newly diagnosed patients by offering structured education, conducting clinical assessments, and developing personalised management plans for patients, families, and carers. Additionally, they run independent nurse-led clinics, providing care through face-to-face, virtual, or telephone consultations. They also provide clinical advice and assessments as needed, working to prevent patient deterioration and avoid unnecessary hospital admissions. The role includes offering specialist advice and training to parents and carers and the child and young person where appropriate and offering education to staff and professionals working with them.

Job responsibilities
As a Specialist Epilepsy Nurse, you will play a pivotal role in education, service leadership, MDT collaboration, clinical governance, and research. You will develop and deliver tailored educational resources for children, families, and schools, and create training programs for healthcare professionals. You will lead quality improvement initiatives, engage with national and regional epilepsy networks, and oversee the implementation of epilepsy processes. Additionally, you will mentor junior staff as required and maintain a safe, effective service by intervening when necessary. In collaboration with a multidisciplinary team, you will ensure continuity of care, working with professionals across health, social care, and education sectors. You will also contribute to clinical governance, ensuring evidence-based practices, overseeing audits, and maintaining high safeguarding standards. This role offers a chance to make a meaningful impact on epilepsy care in Bolton, improving patient outcomes while driving service improvement within a collaborative team.

Person Specification
Qualifications
  • Registered Nurse, Child or RSCN
  • Specialist Practitioner Degree or Equivalent Paediatric degree
  • V300 Non-medical prescriber
  • BPNA PET course or further epilepsy training
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development

Experience
  • Leadership experience.
  • Experience of effective multiagency working with an ability to establish and maintain collegiate partnership working
  • Teaching and mentoring of students and other professionals
  • Evidence of successful implementation of change in clinical in practice
  • Good understanding and experience of undertaking research and audit related to specialism clinical skills appropriate to job role.

Skills
  • Extensive clinical knowledge and skills in the management of paediatric epilepsy
  • Ability to work autonomously
  • Ability to prioritise, implement and use new ways of working
  • Effective communicator to a wide range of professionals and situations
  • Evidence of delivering education to families and other stakeholders and teaching clinical skills appropriate to job role.
  • Significant experience using Microsoft applications include Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Experienced in using electronic patient record databases

Knowledge
  • Condition specific, up to date evidence based, highly specialist knowledge
  • Knowledge of pre-registration students requirements
  • Knowledge of Bolton locality support and specialist services
