The Antenatal Day Unit provides planned appointments for pregnant women and birthing people with high-risk pregnancies who require additional monitoring, assessment, and specialist care throughout their pregnancy. This vacancy is required to provide strong clinical and operational leadership within the unit, ensuring the safe and effective delivery of care and the smooth day-to-day running of the service. We require an experienced midwife with specialist antenatal knowledge and expertise who can provide clinical oversight, support complex decision-making, and act as a role model for best practice. The Lead Midwife will play a key role in supporting, supervising, and educating rotational and newly appointed midwives, helping to develop a skilled and competent workforce. This role is essential to maintaining high standards of clinical care, promoting patient safety, supporting staff development, and ensuring the delivery of effective, evidence-based care for women and birthing people with complex pregnancy needs.
Main duties of the job- Responsible for supporting the safe and effective operational and clinical management of the Antenatal Day Unit (ANDU) in the absence of the Ward Manager and Deputy Ward Manager.
- Demonstrates flexibility to ensure the provision of a safe, responsive service and promotes a positive, inclusive culture for women, families, and colleagues.
- Works collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to deliver high-quality, evidence-based care and positive patient outcomes.
- Utilises specialist antenatal expertise to support, teach, and mentor rotational, newly qualified, and newly appointed midwives, ensuring the delivery of safe and effective care.
- Takes ownership of clinical audits, governance activities, and quality improvement initiatives to enhance service quality and patient safety.
- Supports incident review processes, identifying learning opportunities and implementing improvements to practice.
- Actively promotes staff wellbeing and professional development, fostering a supportive environment that encourages continuous learning, teamwork, and excellence in maternity care.

Job responsibilities- Responsible for supporting the safe and effective running of the Antenatal Day Unit and able to support the Maternity Assessment Centre when required.

- Contribute to the development and implementation of a new electronic diary.
- Provides expert antenatal care and acts as a clinical resource for colleagues, promoting evidence-based practice and high standards of care.
- Supports the induction, education, and ongoing development of rotational, newly qualified, and new-to-area midwives, ensuring staff are competent and confident in delivering safe and effective care.
- Works collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to provide coordinated, woman-centred care and achieve positive outcomes for women and families.

Person SpecificationExperience- Significant experience as a band 6 registered midwife

Skills- Excellent verbal and written command of English
- Supervision of non-registered staff and students
- Ability to manage staffing and skill mix efficiently and effectively
- Demonstrate ability to prioritise own workload and recognise, prioritise and respond appropriately to urgent and emergency situations including non-clinical situations
- IV Skills
- Able to contribute to the development, implementation and monitoring of local objectives and action plans
Knowledge- Understanding of Information Governance and Confidentiality
- Evidence of a research and evidence based approach to practice
- Able to Mentor and assess midwifery, medical and nursing students.
- Participation and contribution in the maternity service regarding the continuity of care and Better Births agenda
- Able to use and apply IT to complete work based projects, responses and information to support the ward/service.
