19.10.2026We are seeking an enthusiastic and compassionate midwife to join the Birth Matters Service, on a fixed-term 18-month secondment for 19 hours per month. The successful candidate will provide a personalised and trauma informed reflective discussion and care-planning service for women and birthing people who are planning to give birth or who have received maternity care at Bradford.
The post-holder will facilitate supportive conversations that promote informed decision-making and provide opportunities for families to reflect on their maternity experience. The role aims to help individuals understand the events surrounding their care, address concerns, and identify any ongoing emotional or psychological support needs.
The post-holder will ensure timely signposting and referral to appropriate services and other healthcare professionals according to their individual needs. They will play a key role in enhancing their maternity experience by supporting the implementation of evidence-based care and national maternity recommendations.

Main duties of the job- Triage Birth Matters Service referrals, arrange and facilitate appointments in a clinic, virtual, or telephone setting, providing personalised, trauma-informed support tailored to the individual needs of women, birthing people, and their families.
- Support and deputise for the Specialist Midwife for Quality Practice as required, contributing to the ongoing delivery and development of the service.
- Act as an advocate for women and birthing people, promoting informed choice, shared decision-making, and collaborative care planning with the multidisciplinary team.
- Provide reflective discussions to help women and birthing people understand and process their maternity experiences, address concerns, and support planning for future pregnancies and births.
- Assess and identify individual informational, safeguarding, physical, emotional, and mental health needs, ensuring timely signposting or referral to appropriate support services and other healthcare professionals.
- Contribute to service improvement by identifying emerging themes, evaluating outcomes and feedback, and sharing learning and recommendations with the wider multidisciplinary maternity team to enhance the quality of maternity care.

Job responsibilities- Practice in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Code (2018) and adhere to all Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust policies, procedures, standards, and guidelines.
- Support and deputise for the Specialist Midwife for Quality Practice as required, ensuring continuity of the Birth Matters Service.
- Work collaboratively with the maternity multidisciplinary teams to provide specialist support for women and birthing people requiring trauma-informed care, shared decision-making, and personalised care planning, particularly where choices fall outside of local or national clinical guidance.
- Facilitate sensitive, trauma-informed reflective discussions tailored to the individual needs, experiences, and preferences of women, birthing people, and their partners, supporting understanding of maternity experiences and future care planning.
- Exercise a high level of professional judgement and decision-making in responding to complex clinical, obstetric, medical, social, safeguarding, and mental health needs, seeking guidance from the Specialist Midwife for Quality Practice or senior colleagues when appropriate.
- Support the delivery and ongoing development of the Birth Matters Service, contributing to the management of caseloads, service evaluation, and quality improvement activities.
- Provide professional leadership, guidance, and support to maternity staff, promoting evidence-based practice in trauma-informed care, birth trauma, tokophobia, personalised care, and shared decision-making.
- Act as a positive role model and advocate for women, birthing people, families, and staff, fostering a culture of compassion, inclusion, and personalised maternity care.
- Maintain effective communication and collaborative working relationships across multidisciplinary and multi-agency services to ensure coordinated, high-quality care and positive outcomes for women and families.
- If required represent the Specialist Midwife for Quality Practice at internal and external meetings, forums, and regional networks as required, contributing to service development and the sharing of best practice.
- Contribute to wider maternity quality improvement initiatives, including engagement with Maternity Voices Partnerships, service user feedback, and local and national maternity agendas, helping to develop and implement action plans to improve care and experience.
- Ensure accurate and timely documentation, record keeping, and data management in line with professional standards, clinical governance requirements, and Trust policies.
- Utilise highly developed communication and interpersonal skills to gather, interpret, present, and share complex information relating to women's experiences, care pathways, outcomes, and service learning.
- Support and develop staff in clinical practice by providing advice, education, supervision, and encouragement, enabling colleagues to build confidence and competence in managing complex care plans and personalised choices.
- Recognise, anticipate, and help resolve potential areas of conflict, providing support and guidance to staff managing challenging or sensitive situations.
- Contribute to the development and delivery of maternity education and training programmes, ensuring practice reflects current evidence, national recommendations, and local policies relating to personalised care, informed choice, birth trauma, and quality improvement.
- Take responsibility for maintaining own professional competence through continuing professional development, reflective practice, and compliance with NMC revalidation requirements.
- Support the delivery of quality standards within the Trust's Clinical Governance Framework, contributing to service evaluation, learning, and continuous improvement to ensure the provision of safe, effective, and compassionate maternity care.
Person SpecificationExperienceEssential- Experience of working as a Registered Midwife in a wide range of settings
- Experience of facilitating teaching and training and leading compassionate conversations with staff and families
- Experience of supporting women and birth people with complex care plans through pregnancy and birth.
Desirable- Good understanding of and experience of quality improvement
SkillsEssential- High level of work organisation, self-motivation, drive for performance and improvement, and flexibility in approach and attitude
KnowledgeEssential- Understanding of maternity transformation agenda and current national maternity reports
- Understanding of Information Governance and confidentiality
- Understanding of trauma informed care and how this impacts the individual and their care planning.
- Understanding of the Quality and Safety agenda within maternity, including learning from incidents and best practice to support choice and personalisation.
QualificationsEssential- First level Registered Midwife.
- First Degree or equivalent level of knowledge and experience gained in a relevant environment
- Teaching Qualification (997/SLIPS or equivalent)
- Evidence of commitment to continuous learning and application in practice
