Respiratory Outpatients is recruiting a Band 7 Respiratory Physiotherapist.

  • Within the wider Adult Therapies team, Respiratory Outpatients is a small, hard-working team committed to delivering excellent patient care and continually improving the service.
  • The role requires independent working, including running clinics, while benefiting from the support of the respiratory MDT and teams across the respiratory pathway. The post involves cross-site working across South Bristol Community Hospital and Weston General Hospital.
  • Alongside inspiring colleagues in Adult Therapies, you'll have access to research opportunities, coaching, mentoring, leadership development, clinical courses, and conference opportunities.
  • The service covers bronchiectasis, breathing pattern disorder, chest clearance, and has recently received funding to expand services for patients with complex asthma.

Main duties of the job
  • To provide a comprehensive and highly specialised Physiotherapy Respiratory outpatient service for patients with Severe Asthma, Breathing Pattern Disorders, Bronchiectasis, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), and Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia (PCD) as part of both independent physiotherapy clinics and multi-disciplinary teams.
  • To work closely with the established MDTs for Severe Asthma, Bronchiectasis, and Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia, to enhance the quality, consistency, and effectiveness of care.
  • To take a leadership role in identifying opportunities for benchmarking, engaging with clinical networks, and building collaborative relationships at local, regional, and national levels to shape high quality, evidence-based care for the cohort.
  • To proactively seek clinical guidance and wider professional expertise to support service development and continually improve care for these patient groups.
  • To provide highly specialised advice to rotational Physiotherapists, students and other healthcare professionals regarding respiratory patients, in particular Severe asthma, Breathing Pattern Disorders, COPD/Bronchiectasis, and PCD patients.

Job responsibilities
  • To provide and develop specialised physiotherapy services for patients with severe asthma, breathing pattern disorder, bronchiectasis and general respiratory outpatient services in line with guidance and national standards.
  • To provide specialist advice to patients, colleagues, other health care professionals and medical staff in the Trust and local area within the specialty of respiratory outpatients
  • As an autonomous practitioner, use effective skills in the assessment and treatment of adults with respiratory symptoms and conditions, and ensure high quality physiotherapy treatment in an outpatient setting.
  • To support Pathway Lead in planning, coordinating, and delivering the services provided to patients on a day-to-day basis, to include patient services across specialities and assist in the development, planning and progression of service provision
  • To be responsible for a designated area of clinical work, and to plan and organise the team efficiently and effectively with regard to patient management and use of time.
  • To be actively involved in the collection of appropriate data and statistics for the use of the department.
  • To decide priorities for own work area, working with the Pathway Lead, balancing patient related and professional demands.
  • To maintain own CPD/KSF and facilitate that of others within the team.
  • To act as clinical supervisor for Band 6 staff and students, to ensure that their practice meets the required professional standards of physiotherapy practice.
  • To co-ordinate and participate in local and departmental in-service training, by organising, attending, and delivering presentations and training sessions.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
  • Degree in Physiotherapy
  • Current HCPC registration
  • Evidence of relevant respiratory post-graduate training

Desirable
  • Further qualification (Msc or equivalent) in physiotherapy or associated subject
  • Member of CSP
  • Member of relevant local/national clinical interest group (ACPCF, ACPRC)
  • Management training
  • Non-medical prescribing qualification

Clinical experience
Essential
  • Significant experience at senior level in range of respiratory physiotherapy services
  • Excellent clinical reasoning and problem solving strategies
  • In depth clinical knowledge in respiratory Physiotherapy underpinned by theory and practical experience

Desirable
  • Experience of breathing pattern disorders underpinned by theory and practical exposure
  • Experience of complex asthma underpinned by theory and practical exposure

Supervision and management
Essential
  • Leadership skills
  • Experience of people management including undergraduate students
  • Significant experience of clinical supervision, mentoring and teaching

Audit and research
Essential
  • Participation in service development
  • Knowledge and experience of using clinical outcome measures and audit
  • Understanding of the political and professional agenda
  • Ability to prioritise and manage multiple projects effectively

  • Experience of implementing change
