Job summary
Applications are invited for a 12 month fixed term Locum Consultant post in Respiratory and General (internal) Medicine.

This is a whole-time post offering an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated Medic to join a dynamic, rapidly expanding team delivering multidisciplinary acute care in Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals.

Applicants are required to hold Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (UK or equivalent qualifications)

Due to the short-term nature of the role / service demand, the successful candidate must hold full registration with the GMC and have existing right to live and work in the UK, at the time of application.Candidates who are not GMC registered or do not hold existing right to live and work in the UK, at the time of application will not progress through to the shortlisting stage.

An Enhanced DBS with barred lists for both Adults & Children is required for this post.

Main duties of the job
This full time NHS post will enable the Trust to continue the delivery of Respiratory services across the primary/secondary care interface, support delivery of acute care for respiratory patients and achieve waiting time targets for outpatients and emergency care.

Successful candidates will complement existing General Respiratory and lung cancer team

Weekday on call commitment. The weekday on call rota (General Medicine) will be a 1 in 14 providing telephone advice between the hours of 7pm and 9am (Monday - Friday) and 5pm - 9am (Saturday & Sunday).

Time off in lieu or a hybrid of time off in lieu and payment can be offered for oncall commitment

Acute Care
Providing emergency and maternity services at Whiston, Southport and Ormskirk hospitals, and medical and surgical specialties across all our sites.

Primary Care
Providing primary care services at Marshalls Cross Medical Centre situated in St Helens Hospital.

Community Services
Providing adult community services for St Helens and a wheelchair service in Chorley, South Ribble, and West Lancashire. Our inpatient unit at Newton Community Hospital is where patients needing acute hospital beds can continue rehabilitation, freeing up space for more unwell patients. We also provide urgent care at our Urgent Treatment Centre located in St Helens town centre.

Specialist Regional Services
We provide the Mersey Regional Burns & Plastic Surgery Unit at Whiston Hospital and the Spinal Injuries Unit at Southport Hospital to more than 4 million people across the whole of Merseyside, West Lancashire, Cheshire, Isle of Man and North Wales.

Job responsibilities
This is an exciting opportunity to join a developing Respiratory service on the Southport Site at Mersey & West Lancashire Hospital.

The Consultant appointments to these posts will deliver sessions of care to general medicine inpatients on the ward in conjunction with 1 General Respiratory weekly outpatient clinic, 2 Lung Cancer weekly clinics (1 for new patients and 1 for follow-up patients) on our Ormskirk site, in-reach service for a selected acute respiratory admission ward round, as well as bronchoscopy services.

The Respiratory department currently is made up of 4 full time Respiratory Consultants
  • The Consultants appointed to these posts will help to supervise and work alongside 2 respiratory ST3+ trainees, 1 specialty doctor and 1 senior clinical fellows. This is complemented by larger team of 3 foundation year trainees, 2 internal medicine trainees (IMT1 & IMT2)/GP trainees, a Physician Associate and ACP
  • The medical team is also supported by 2 equivalent full time lung cancer nurses and a lung cancer support worker as well as 2.6 equivalent full time general respiratory specialist nurses.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
  • Full GMC registration and on Specialist Register or within six months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at time of interview
  • Applicants that are UK trained, must ALSO be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview. Applicants that are non-UK trained, will be required to provide evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT on successful application
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • MRCP or equivalent medical qualification
  • MD/PHD or equivalent medical qualification
  • Valid Advanced Life Support (ALS) Provider Status

  • Evidence of achievement of competencies by time of appointment in line with GMC standards/Good Medical Practice including: oGood clinical care oMaintaining good medical practice oGood relationships and communication with patients oGood working relationships with colleagues oGood teaching and training oProfessional behaviour and probity oDelivery of good acute clinical care
  • Demonstrate exemplary skills in written and spoken English
  • Appropriate knowledge and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems.
  • Demonstrates the necessary range, depth and breadth of competencies specified in the Respiratory and General Internal Medicine curricula.
