Job summary
The Division of Medicine is looking to fill a vacancy within Acute/General Medicine in order to increase the consultant capacity within the acute medical team. A 'special' interest (as defined by the Acute Internal Medicine curriculum or dual CCT) will be considered.

The Trust is based on two Acute sites with Acute Medical services on each site. The Acute Stroke unit is based at Calderdale Hospital along with specialist Cardiology and Respiratory wards and the specialist Gastroenterology and Oncology/Haematology wards are based at Huddersfield with specialist Frailty and Care of the Elderly services.

Main duties of the job
The successful applicant will form part of our Acute Medical Consultant team, providing Acute services across the two Trust sites, Successful candidates will be expected to cover our two Acute Floors, Short Stay/outlying wards, Medical Same Day Emergency Care (MSDEC) unit and EDs (Admission Avoidance).

The Acute teams run the Acute Medical Units (AMUs) with a total bed base of 106 (60 CRH, 46 HRI- including Frailty). These are planned as 'acute floors' incorporating both Acute assessment beds but also short stay beds. The Huddersfield 'floor' is shared with the Acute Frailty team who have ongoing responsibility for 22 patients. Successful candidates will be expected to cover Acute/Short Stay and outlying wards. There is a consultant led ward round of the AMUs each morning, followed by continual assessment on the AMUs until 8pm on most days of the week.

Job responsibilities
The Trust wishes to ensure that Consultants have time in their job plan to undertake Supporting Professional Activities which underpin and maintain high quality patient care. The Trust Board and Local Negotiating Committee have agreed that a Core allocation of 1.5 SPAs should be allocated to undertake CPD, appraisal, clinical supervision, audit and clinical governance, mandatory training and the general management of the service. Objectives should be agreed at the Job Plan review meeting with regards to this SPA.

Qualifications
Essential
  • MRCP or equivalent
  • Specialist registration for Acute Medicine is preferred (or within 6 months of being admitted to the register for trainees, if currently in a training programme in the UK) but consideration will be given to applicants with relevant consultant level experience or trainees in a UK training scheme who are within 6 months of attaining specialist registration.
  • Applicants must be Registered with the General Medical Council and hold a Licence to Practise

  • Relevant higher degree

Experience and Achievements
Essential
  • Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in all aspects of the Acute Medicine specialty

Desirable
  • Also, should have significant minor Acute Medicine procedures experience and any other post graduate qualifications that can advance the department needs would be preferable
  • Understanding current issues within the wider NHS
  • Attendance at a recognised management course
  • Shows ability to work with and lead others across professions

Teaching and Training
Essential
  • Experience of and enthusiasm for clinical teaching of postgraduate doctors and non-medical staff.

Desirable
  • Academic achievements/evidence of familiarity with research methods which have resulted in publications
  • Training in clinical and educational supervision
  • Attendance at a teaching course

  • Knowledge of Audit principles and evidence of participation in and completion of audit projects

  • Ability to work in various locations throughout the network of services provided by Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust
  • For areas requiring EPP Clearance (Exposure Prone Procedures), this will also be a requirement of the health screening
  • An enhanced DBS disclosure will be required with the Disclosure and Barring Service
