Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Post-CCT Senior Clinical Fellow in Stroke Thrombectomy and Interventional Radiology to join the Interventional Neuroradiology service. The post is designed to provide advanced, hands-on training in neuro-endovascular techniques, supporting the transition of an experienced Interventional Radiologist to independent Mechanical Thrombectomy (MT) practice. The successful candidate will work within a high-performing hyper-acute stroke service, gaining extensive experience in the assessment and treatment of acute ischaemic stroke under the supervision of experienced Interventional Neuroradiologists. The fellowship will support the development of competencies aligned to the GMC Credential curriculum and Royal College of Radiologists requirements, with structured educational supervision, regular progress reviews and opportunities to contribute to service development, research and quality improvement activities. The appointment is for 12-24 months, dependent on previous neuro-interventional experience and training needs.

Main duties of the job
Participate in assessment, selection & management of patients for Mechanical Thrombectomy through interpretation of hyper-acute stroke imaging; CT, CTA, CTP and MRI. Develop expertise in endovascular thrombectomy procedures; progress from supervised to independent practice, advanced skills in intracranial catheter navigation, microcatheter techniques, stent retriever deployment and aspiration thrombectomy. Contribute to management of complex neurovascular cases, inc. procedural complications & use of salvage angioplasty/stenting as appropriate.

Support the regional hyper-acute stroke thrombectomy rota & delivery of a 24/7 thrombectomy service. Maintain broader diagnostic & interventional radiology competencies via participation in general interventional radiology & emergency diagnostic services, inc. on-call commitments. Work collaboratively with regional stroke teams & multidisciplinary colleagues, providing specialist neurovascular imaging & interventional expertise.

Maintain a comprehensive procedural logbook & portfolio demonstrating progression against the Mechanical Thrombectomy credential curriculum. Actively contribute to multidisciplinary team meetings, morbidity and mortality reviews, clinical audit, quality improvement initiatives, education and research to enhance service delivery and patient outcomes. Support achievement of national stroke performance standards and promote excellence, innovation and continuous improvement across the regional stroke network.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
  • Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice
  • CCT in Clinical Radiology (or within 6 months of CCT date).
  • FRCR or equivalent international postgraduate qualification.

Desirable
  • MTAIS Credential registration
  • European Board of Interventional Radiology (EBIR).
  • oCommencement of ECMINT, EXMINT or similar European society training programme for minimally invasive Neurological procedures.

Experience
Essential
  • Minimum 2-3 years of sub-specialty training in Interventional Radiology
  • Competent in standard IR access, microcatheter use, angioplasty and embolization procedures
  • Competent in interpreting basic brain CT, CTA, and MRI

Desirable
  • Prior diagnostic neuroradiology rotation.
  • Experience performing basic cerebral angiograms, and other interventional Neuroradiology procedures.
  • Experience with carotid stent placement, ideally as first operator
  • Ideal candidates would already have experience in successfully performing both intracranial and extracranial thrombectomy under supervision.
