Job summary
CNWL is looking an enthusiastic and highly motivated Consultant to join the Harness Community Mental health Team.

This full time position would be excellent for someone wanting to broaden their experience of community psychiatry and develop their clinical skills in a supportive and challenging environment. The team is well established with good support from senior clinical and managerial colleagues.

Main duties of the job
This is a Consultant Psychiatrist replacement post working within the Harness Locality Community Mental Health Team. The post holder will have consultant and RC responsibility for a defined caseload of service users under the care of the local CMHT. The post holder will also provide mentoring and supervision as an experienced consultant.

About us
Brent Adult Mental Health Service provides a range of services for adults within community and hospital settings. Our community services have recently transformed to improve the quality of care received by people with mental health needs in their local community in line with the NHS Long Term Plan, towards provision of more integrated, personalised and place-based care.

Brent adult mental health services:o Acute in-patients (4 ward ) and PICU (13 beds) - Park Royal Centre for Mental Healtho Community Mental Health Hubs - organised in three hubs serving the three GP networks in the borough. Harness and Kilburn hubs are based at Park Royal Centre for Mental Health, Park Royal; Kingsbury and Willesden Hub is based at Fairfields House, Kingsbury.o Early Intervention Service: Fairlight Avenue, Harlesdeno Home Treatment Team (HTT): Park Royal.o Mental Health Act Team (AMHP Team): Park Royal Brent Integrated Psychology and Psychotherapy Services embedded within teamso Community Forensic Service: Provided in collaboration with West London NHS Trust.o Brent Talking Therapieso Brent Community Collaboration and health inequalities teamo Mental health social team which deliver AMHP, hospital discharge, placements and complex case managemento Rethink mental health team

Job responsibilities
  • To manage, appraise and provide professional supervision to junior medical staff as agreed between consultant colleagues and the medical director.
  • To ensure that junior medical staff working with the post holder, operate within the parameters of the New Deal and are Working Time Directive compliant.
  • To record clinical activity accurately and comprehensively, and submit this promptly through the trusts clinical information systems.
  • To participate in service and business planning activity for the locality and, as appropriate, for the whole mental health service.
  • To participate in annual appraisal for consultants.
  • To attend and participate in the academic program of the Trust, including lectures and seminars as part of the internal CPD program.
  • To participate annually, as a minimum, in a job plan review with the clinical manager, which will include consultation with a relevant manager in order to ensure that the post is developed to take into account changes in service configuration and delivery associated with modernization.
  • To work with local managers and professional colleagues in ensuring the efficient running of services, and share with consultant colleagues in the medical contribution to management.
  • To comply with the Trusts agreed policies, procedures, standing orders and financial instructions, and to take an active role in the financial management of the service and support the medical director and other managers in preparing plans for services
  • Assessment of new patients and clinical supervision of assessments carried out by other team members.
  • Full participation in the multidisciplinary team providing care in the community.
  • Senior medical responsibility for the care carried out by the Community Mental Health Team for both CPA and LPC patients.
  • Review and monitoring of the caseload to ensure appropriate care packages are put in place and discharges facilitated to maintain patient flow.
  • Contribution to the continuous development of the Community Mental Health Team, and to other parts of the Service as required.
  • Domiciliary visits to provide assessment and treatment services as a member of the CMHT
  • Domiciliary assessments in response to emergencies
  • Research, in terms of personal projects and clinical audits as part of clinical governance.
  • Involvement in joint planning of future service development.
  • Occasional psychiatric assessments of residents who may be in crisis in another borough.
  • Close liaison with the wards to facilitate admission and discharge planning.
  • Liaison with HTT, Psychiatric Liaison Services, AMHP services and Forensic Services in the borough.

Person Specification
QUALIFICATIONS
Essential
  • MB BS or equivalent medical qualification.

Desirable
  • Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management
  • MRCPsych OR MRCPsych equivalent approved by the Royal College of Psychiatrists
  • Additional clinical qualifications.

ELIGIBILITY
Essential
  • Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment.
  • Included on the GMC Specialist Register OR within six months.
  • Approved clinician status OR able to achieve within 3 months of appointment
  • Approved under S12 OR able to achieve with 3 months of appointment

Desirable
  • In good standing with GMC with respect to warning and conditions on practice

CLINICAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE
Essential
  • Excellent knowledge in specialty
  • Excellent clinical skills using bio-psycho-social perspective and wide medical knowledge
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
  • Able to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty
  • Makes decisions based on evidence and experience including the contribution of others
  • Able to meet duties under MHA and MCA

Desirable
  • Wide range of specialist and sub-specialist experience relevant to working in community services within NHS or a comparable service.
