Job summary
This exciting post is for providing senior expertise as Responsible Clinician in the assessment and treatment of patients admitted to the acute inpatient working age adults 19 bedded ward, Embleton Ward at St Georges Park.

The post is well supported with SAS grade doctor and 2 resident doctors and a full MDT. There is a good cohort of inpatient and rehabilitation consultants at St Georges Park who work well together and supportively.

There is potential to get involved in teaching and training and the local Clinical Business unit are keen to support interest in research and involvement in management and educational roles.

There will be active liaison with bed management and the home treatment service for early discharge planning and community and home-based treatment.

There is active liaison into the wards by rehabilitation clinicians to identify patients for inpatient rehabilitation services.

There will be support with appraisal and job planning and the opportunity to join one of several consultant peer groups to support appraisal.

Main duties of the job
The Consultant will provide leadership for the inpatient ward team and the inpatient medics in the assessment and treatment of patients admitted to the ward.

They will work with bed management, crisis and home treatment and the hospital to home teams to facilitate timely discharge of patients into the community using the option of facilitated discharge as needed. They will assess and manage mental health needs and also the physical health needs with the support of the inpatient medical and nursing teams liaising with acute physicians, GPs, and other healthcare providers as needed.

They will provide medical assessments, diagnosis and formulation to patients admitted to the ward and assess and make recommendations under the Mental Health Act as needed.

They will act as Responsible clinician for patients detained under the mental health act and will section 12 approval to detain patients when required.

They will support the ward MDT to provide up to date, evidence-based interventions for the patients and ensure referral to the appropriate services as needed.

They will be able to contribute to the ongoing training and development programme within the team and to train and supervise junior medical staff, medical students and other allied professions. They can develop their interests in management roles, educational roles and research roles as fit their interests and develop their personal goals

Job responsibilities
The consultant will collaborate with GPs, Community Treatment Team and primary care clinicians regarding the physical health care of patients admitted under the post holders care.

They will be able to provide leadership, consultation, advice and guidance within the adult acute pathway and to work collaboratively with Senior Clinical Colleagues in the Inpatient Care team.

They will also be able to work collaboratively with colleagues in other specialist mental health teams. They will be able to take a lead role with the Team Manager and other colleagues in service improvements and development.

Person Specification
Qualifications and Training
Essential
  • MBBS (or equivalent)
  • Included on GMC Specialist Register (General Psychiatry) or eligible for inclusion, or a trainee within six months of CCT
  • Approved under Section12(2) of the Mental Health Act 1983
  • Approved Clinician Status

Desirable
  • MRCPsych or equivalent qualification
  • Postgraduate qualifications in a relevant field
  • Has undergone training in educational supervision
  • Has undergone training in appraisal

Knowledge
Essential
  • Up to date knowledge in the field of Psychiatry
  • Awareness of current issues and controversies in service provision, mental health policy and legislation

Desirable
  • An area of special interest relevant to the post as demonstrated by publications or presentations to learned societies

Experience
Essential
  • Experience of multidisciplinary team working
  • Wide clinical experience in general adult psychiatry in different clinical settings
  • Experience of Clinical Audit

Desirable
  • Experience in multiagency work especially with service user, carer and voluntary agencies
  • Experience in service management or development

Skills
Essential
  • High level of clinical skills
  • Able to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Proven competence in diagnosis and management of psychiatric disorders in Adult Psychiatry
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Excellent teaching skills
  • Demonstrate the ability to work in a time efficient manner

Desirable
  • Established record of clinical leadership
  • Established ability as a clinical teacher
  • Training in specific and relevant treatment skills eg a brief form of psychological therapy.
