Job summary
We currently have an exciting opportunity for Band 6 nurse to join the Special School Nursing Service which is part of Hillingdon's Community Children's Nursing Team (CCNT).

We are looking for a nurse who is highly motivated, enthusiastic and caring, to work within a team supporting children & Young people from 3-19 years who have a range of learning disabilities and complex health needs such as epilepsy, enteral feeding and oxygen dependent children. You will be allocated a named school but will be required to work across any of the 5 sites. The team works closely with other multi-disciplinary agencies and the schools to ensure the children reach their full potential.

The candidate should have previous experience of working with children with complex health needs, excellent communication skills and be highly motivated. They should also have a flexible approach, able to work autonomously to deliver the service to the local children. An understanding of safeguarding and working with vulnerable families is required.

You will be supported by the special school nurses in the team and the CCNT.

Main duties of the job
The Special school nurses will work closely with the children/young people who use our services, families, friends and carers and play an important contribution in how people experience our services. Special School nurses are expected to be kind and responsive but professional and informative and contribute to the quality of the services we provide by:

• keeping the children/young people who using our services as safe as possible through the use of sound clinical skills and effective risk assessments
• responsible for implementing assessments, management of medical clinics, supporting school staff on clinical care, management of medication
• ensuring the best possible clinical outcomes by using up-to-date skills and adhering to evidence based policies and procedures
• ensuring the people using our services have a good experience by respecting, empowering and working in partnership with people throughout the care planning process

About us
You will be part of the Children's Community Nursing Team (CCNT) in Hillingdon, working closely with the children's nurses, school staff, other allied health professionals and medical staff at Hillingdon Hospital as well as the specialist dietitian.. You will also be part of a wider peer supervision group of children's nurses to support evidence based practice and innovation.

Job responsibilities

• To assess the health needs of children/young people within a school setting, agree individual school health care plans and deliver these through multidisciplinary partnerships
• To organise the day to day Special School Nursing Services to children within the Special Needs Schools, through supporting the school staff.
• To ensure the best possible clinical outcomes by using up-to-date skills and adhering to evidence based policies and procedures.
• Special School nurses work as part of a team and you will contribute to the success of the team by being an effective role model and supervising other Band 5 nurses, healthcare assistants/ support workers and students to ensure they are working to the standards which the people using our services deserve.

Education and Qualifications
Essential

• Registered nurse -Child/RSCN/Adult/RNLD/Learning disabilities
• Numeracy skills required for the safe administration of medicines
• Evidence of relevant Continuous Professional Development

Desirable

• Child/RSCN Mentorship qualification
• Epilepsy PET 1 & 2 course

Previous experience
Essential

• Previous experience as a Band 6 nurse / as a Band 5 nurse with relevant post registration experience
• Recent experience with children's nursing/ learning disabilities within acute/community setting.

Desirable

• Community experience
• Previous experience working in a Special school

Skills and Knowledge
Essential

• Able to communicate with the multi-disciplinary team, present cases, take note of actions, update others in the team and use handover effectively. Speaking face to face but also by telephone and writing letters and reports
• Maintaining accurate, timely, concise and legible clinical records both electronic and handwritten which adhere to the CNWL policies
• Understanding how the Mental Health Act impacts on their work and the people they are working with
• High standard of clinical expertise and knowledge of general paediatrics
• Experience of working with the acute, long term conditions and complex children/young people
• Experience of working with students
• Ability to work autonomously and prioritise workload
• Experience of teaching and care planning
