Job summary
We are looking for an experienced and motivated Ward Manager to provide clinical and operational leadership for our inpatient ward at Finchley Memorial Hospital. The successful candidate will lead and support the nursing team to deliver safe, high-quality, patient-centred care while promoting a positive and inclusive team culture.

The Ward Manager will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the ward, ensuring high standards of care, effective team performance, and continuous service improvement. Working closely with the MDT, Matron, and Clinical Lead, you will drive quality, support staff development, and ensure patients receive seamless, compassionate care.

Main duties of the job
  • Provide visible clinical and operational leadership, ensuring the delivery of safe, effective, and evidence-based nursing care for patients with complex health needs.
  • Take overall responsibility for the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care within the ward, ensuring high standards of care and patient experience
  • Work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team, community services, social care, and other key partners to ensure seamless, coordinated care and effective discharge planning.
  • Ensure the safety and wellbeing of patients through effective risk assessment, safeguarding practices, infection prevention and control, and adherence to clinical governance requirements.
  • Support patients, families, and carers by providing information, guidance, and involvement in care planning and decision-making.
  • Be responsible for the performance, supervision, and development of ward staff, ensuring appropriate support, appraisal, and performance management processes are in place
  • Work closely with the Matron and Clinical Lead to support service development, achieve quality and performance targets, and ensure the efficient use of resources while delivering high-quality patient-centred care.

Person Specification
Education/Qualification
Essential
  • Registered Nurse with current UK NMC registration
  • Evidence of continuing professional education and training at degree level
  • Qualification in team / service management or prepared to work towards.
  • Mentor or practice based learning training

Experience
Essential
  • Evidence of recent post-registration nursing experience in community/acute nursing
  • Experience of negotiating and liaising within a multi-disciplinary team
  • Experience of working with people with complex needs
  • Experience of co-ordinating and managing a team
  • Experience of teaching others and mentoring students
  • Experience of evidence-based care
  • Experience of undertaking comprehensive health needs assessment and developing complex care plans
  • Experience of co-ordinating and delivering care for people with complex, long term conditions

Skills & Knowledge
Essential
  • Knowledge of principles of care for long term conditions, relevant NSFs and other national standards
  • Knowledge of NMC Code of Professional Conduct.
  • Knowledge of Personal Development Planning.
  • Knowledge of current health care policy and relevance to the delivery of healthcare services
  • Detailed knowledge of Primary Health Care and collaborative working with other care providers, e.g. social care and voluntary services
  • Knowledge of the audit process
  • Knowledge of evidence based practice
  • Knowledge of clinical governance & clinical supervision
  • Knowledge of managing difficult situations and conflict resolution
  • Knowledge of how equal opportunities can be implemented in practice
  • Has a range of clinical skills and expertise relevant to the role
  • Effective negotiation skills
  • Basic computer skills
