Job responsibilitiesJob PurposeAs a General Practice Assistant (GPA), you will play a crucial role in supporting both our clinical and administrative teams. This blended role focuses on improving patient flow, smoothing administrative workflows, and delivering high-quality, hands-on clinical services. You will directly support the triage team, manage electronic correspondence on EMIS Web, and provide routine clinical care.
Full training will be provided to enable the successful post holder to safely and competently carry out all clinical and administrative duties outlined in this job description.Key ResponsibilitiesClinical Services- Phlebotomy: Perform routine venepuncture for patients as requested by clinical staff.
- Ear Microsuction: Provide safe ear irrigation and microsuction procedures (following full training and competency sign-off).
- Health Monitoring: Take and record accurate blood pressure (BP) readings, including ambulatory monitoring setup.
- NHS Health Checks: Deliver standard NHS Health Checks, gathering patient data, offering lifestyle advice, and escalating concerns to clinicians.
Triage & Patient Flow- Triage Support: Assist the duty triage team by sorting incoming patient requests, gathering initial information, and routing queries to the most appropriate clinician or service.
- Signposting: Direct patients to right-care pathways, including community pharmacies, social prescribing, or local urgent care.
Administrative Duties & Docman- Docman Management: Process incoming electronic mail and clinical correspondence, correctly coding, actioning and routing letters within EMIS web, highlighting urgent clinical actions for clinician review
- Data Entry: Accurately update patient electronic medical records (EMR) with clinical codes, measurements, and outcomes.
Person SpecificationQualificationsEssential- Good general education (GCSE English & Math)
- Care Certificate or equivalent training/experience
Desirable- Formal GPA Certification/Willingness to undertake training
- Phlebotomy / Microsuction certification
ExperienceEssential- Working in a GP practice or healthcare setting
- Handling patient administration
Desirable- Triage assistance experience
- Prior experience using EMIS Web/Docman
SkillsEssential- Good communication and empathy
- Proficiency with Docman and IT systems
Desirable- Understanding of medical terminology
- Other clinical skills such vaccination/immunisation
