Job summary
This is an exciting opportunity to join our Specialist Nursing Team at East Lancashire Hospitals Women and Newborn Centre.

The post holder will work independently as a Clinical Nurse Specialist performing diagnostic and therapeutic hysteroscopy procedures in line with the Faster Diagnostic Services (FDS) as outlined by NHS England to meet the 28-day target from referral to diagnosis.

The post holder will demonstrate advanced levels of clinical judgment, discretion and clinical decision making in accordance with the British Society of Gynaecological Endoscopists (BSGE).

The post holder will be an experienced practitioner, with expert knowledge and skills in the field of hysteroscopy services, undertaking holistic assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of programmes of care in accordance with National Guidance; and able to provide comprehensive consultation and advice for patients.

The role includes providing a Nurse led hysteroscopy service, as part of a MDT in collaboration with a consultant lead supporting a one stop model of care for women who are referred to the service for suspected cancer.The successful post holder will also work in partnership with the patient navigator, the wider operational management team, nursing, and support all teams to deliver the clinical objectives of the Hysteroscopy Faster Diagnosis Service.

About us
As a nurse hysteroscopist, the postholder will be involved in the delivery of FDS hysteroscopy services to all patients attending the department. They will be able to organise their workload efficiently and liaise with referrers and other staff to optimise service delivery.

The Postholder will work unsupervised in delivering all aspects of hysteroscopy, act independently, understand scan findings and produce written reports on examinations performed. Excellent communication skills are essential for this role due to the need to deliver highly sensitive and potentially upsetting information to both patients and relatives.

The hysteroscopy practitioner will also assist in the supervision of students, newly qualified staff, and other professional groups. We expect our hysteroscopy practitioner to actively help with governance and value their input on how we can achieve the best diagnostic outcomes.

They will ensure collaborative working across the MDT, with General Practitioners, partner professionals, and other agencies.

The post holder will give expert clinical advice, practice clinically and autonomously, and implement care that requires specialist assessment, knowledge, and clinical skills.

The post holder will have proven leadership skills and be experienced in staff management, multi-agency working and clinical practice development.

Job responsibilities
  • Independently perform Hysteroscopy examination and treatment
  • Plan and document the on-going care requirements for the women maintain records that reflect planning, communication and management of care.
  • Ensure a working knowledge of the use, maintenance and safety of the machines used in the clinic.
  • Utilise advanced communication skills for complex situations regarding diagnostic findings and patient care.
  • Participate and facilitate the training and education of both medical and nursing staff that are undertaking Hysteroscopy related education.
  • Set, monitor and evaluate standards of care within the service.
  • Conduct qualitative and quantitative audits for the service to highlight the opportunities for the specialist clinic and advance the service.
  • Present audit findings in appropriate forums.

COMMUNICATION
  • Demonstrate pro-active and effective leadership and act as a positive role model.
  • Demonstrate effective communication and collaboration with all members of the multi-disciplinary team.
  • Communicate highly complex and sensitive information to the patient and referring clinician related to diagnosis.
  • Provide and receive highly complex information which requires empathy and reassurance and often involves overcoming barriers to understanding.
  • To communicate effectively and empathetically with relatives of patients.
  • To ensure that urgent findings are communicated and patients are directed accordingly.
  • To liaise with other departments/wards within the hospital and various external sources in order to provide a quality service to patients and clinicians. Keeping them informed of any delays to patient throughput that might result as a consequence of, for example excessive workload, equipment breakdown, sickness etc.
  • Ensure that incidents are reported to the Clinical Services & Quality Manager in accordance with trust policy.
  • To assess and provide specific communication needs of individual patients
  • Attend, contribute and when necessary, lead team meetings.
  • Take responsibility for reviewing the Standard Operating Policy for the service as required.
  • To develop clinical policies and protocols relevant to the service, ensuring that practice is evidence based. Propose changes to procedures and working practices within the service. Ensure all staff understand and adhere to policies and protocols.
  • Create and positively promote an environment which is conducive to education and learning.
  • Participate in the recruitment and selection of staff.

TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT
  • To provide high quality expert clinical training and mentoring to all staff as agreed.
  • To provide specialist information to other Health Professionals regarding Hysteroscopy examinations and treatment as requested.
  • To personally undertake training and study and assessment, as necessary, to ensure that a high level of current professional knowledge and expertise is achieved, to maintain a CPD portfolio as evidence of all training/study and to use this as part of the annual appraisal process.
  • To participate, when possible and appropriate, in teaching, lecturing or presentation of case studies and attending multi-disciplinary team meetings.
  • To participate in research and audit projects and present findings related to these studies as appropriate thus participating in contribution to overall service developments.

ORGANISATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
  • The post holder will actively participate in the Clinical Governance process and Management of Risk. It is a standard element of the role and responsibility of all staff of the Trust that they fulfil a proactive role towards the management of risk in all of their actions. This entails the risk assessment of all situations, the taking of appropriate actions and reporting of all incidents, near misses and hazards. Assist in the process of investigating incidents and participation in route cause analysis and sudden untoward incidents Participate in educating and supporting staff in the governance process.
  • Alongside the Band 7 OPD Manager the post holder will provide leadership and be a role model for medical and nursing staff.
  • The post holder will maintain records to NMC Professional Standards.
  • In conjunction with the Band 7 OPD Manager and Matron the Post holder will develop the service, responding to Professional Guidance e.g. NICE, RCOG Guidance

PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
  • The post holder will maintain NMC registration.
  • The post holder will work within the NMC code of conduct.
  • The post holder will participate in a Quality Assurance process to provide assurance of their ongoing ultrasound competence.
  • As an integral member of the Hysteroscopy team the post holder will collaboratively develop guidelines, pathway, policies and procedures.
  • Alongside the Band 7 OPD Manager the Post holder will provide leadership and be a role model for medical and nursing staff.

Person Specification
Experience
Essential
  • Computer literate.
  • Evidence of high standard of Hysteroscopy abilities for others to follow
  • Demonstrate effective leadership skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Experience of working in a management or supervisory role in the NHS

Desirable
  • Evidence of previous delivery of Specialist Nurse Diagnostic and pathway treatment planning within the specialties

Knowledge and Skills
Essential
  • Use of the Datix reporting system.
  • Use of IT packages such as Microsoft Office, the Internet and the Intranet.
  • Thorough understanding of the principles of clinical governance, risk management, complaints management and audit systems in relation to Hysteroscopy.

Qualifications
Essential
  • NMC registration
  • BSGE qualification in Hysteroscopy
  • Maintenance of BSGE accreditation

Desirable
  • Teaching Qualification or experience.
