We have an exciting opportunity for an innovative and dedicated Occupational Therapist with skills, knowledge and a minimum of 18 months experience in paediatrics, to be part of a growing team of OTs, supporting children and young people between the ages of 0-18 years in the London borough of Newham.
The post-holder will manage their own caseload and will have the opportunity to support more junior staff and students through supervision and competency development. There will be opportunity for the post holder to be involved in service improvement, audit and QI.
The successful applicant will have relevant experience of working with children and families .

We are based at the child development centre in Stratford, in the London Borough of Newham, close to the Olympic Park in the heart of London's East End (with excellent transport links with the rest of London and Essex). The children and young peoples Occupational therapy service has a strong multi-agency work ethic with other services both within the trust and with partner agencies, and offers services across a wide range of care groups in the borough.

Main duties of the job
You will be joining a skilled team who will provide you with a broad range of clinical experiences to ensure you develop the specialist skills you require to progress your OT career.Experience will be gained in a variety of clinical settings including clinics, schools and client homes. The caseload will be varied and provide opportunity for working with children with physical conditions, DCD, neurodiversity, upper limb splinting, seating and much more!

We are part of a multi-disciplinary therapies team who work to deliver a high quality service for the children of Newham and their families. Within the Child Development Service, the team work closely with multidisciplinary partners such as Dietitians, Paediatricians, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists and Specialist Nurses,

Job description
Job responsibilities
To work as an autonomous practitioner in managing a more complex clinical caseload by applying more specialist knowledge and skills to the assessment of the needs of this client group. From the assessment, to formulate a diagnosis and treatment plan designed to enable participation and limit the impact of their condition.
To consistently manage a defined caseload of increasing complex cases independently, evidencing consistent problem solving and clinical reasoning skills in line with evidence based/ client centred principles.
To be responsible for the supervision, teaching and appraisal of a Band 5 Occupational therapist, assistants, and students
To take a greater role in the planning, development and evaluation of the Occupational Therapy Service for Children and contribute to the maintenance and development of the Trust Occupational Therapy Service, beginning to take more of a lead for some specific projects
To provide a specialist level of assessment, therapy and recommendations to a more complex and heterogeneous group of clients with functional difficulties in a variety of settings.
To work jointly with more senior colleagues and other professionals to support children and plan therapy accordingly.

Person Specification
Education/ Qualification
Essential
  • Recognised Occupational Therapy Degree/Post graduate degree Qualification or equivalent
  • Registered Member of Royal College of Occupational Therapists
  • Evidence of successful completion of specialist short courses

Experience
Essential
  • Minimum of 18 months at Band 5 level (preferably in a paediatric setting) with evidence of consolidating OT competencies
  • Ability to undertake all aspects of the occupational therapy process
  • Highly developed skills in relation to a field of specialism visual perception: ability to diagnose specific problems in the field, devise and implement appropriate treatment programmes, and evaluate and modify the programme

Knowledge and Skills
Essential
  • Ability to train parents/carers to carry out therapeutic interventions including gross and fine motor activities using manual dexterity skills and physical stamina e.g. sensory integration treatments using large equipment.
  • Ability to apply safe manual handling techniques to children/young people with highly complex disabilities
  • Ability to prioritise own workload taking into account both clinical and non-clinical elements
  • Ability to reflect and critically appraise own and others performance
  • Excellent interpersonal skills - including observation, listening and empathy skills
  • Negotiation and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrates good analytical and self-reflection skills
