Job Summary
Job Title: Band 6 DEXA Radiographer / Technologist. Hours: 22.5 hours per week (0.6 WTE).

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and motivated DEXA Radiographer/Technologist. The post holder will deliver a high-quality Bone Densitometry (DEXA) service for patients referred from primary and secondary care.

Working independently within established protocols, the post holder will undertake DEXA examinations using the Hologic Bone Densitometry system and support ongoing service development. The department also benefits from Trabecular Bone Score (TBS) software, enabling enhanced assessment of bone quality and osteoporosis risk.

The role involves close collaboration with radiologists, rheumatologists, endocrinologists, fracture liaison services and other MDT members. The post holder will actively contribute to monthly Bone Health/Osteoporosis MDT meetings, supporting case discussion and evidence-based decision making.

Key responsibilities include performing and analysing DEXA scans, maintaining high standards of patient care, ensuring compliance with IR(ME)R and radiation safety regulations, and participating in QA, audit and service improvement activities. The post holder will also support training of staff and students where appropriate.

We are seeking an individual with strong communication and organisational skills, a patient-centred approach, and experience in DEXA imaging. Familiarity with Hologic systems and TBS analysis is desirable.

Main duties of the job
  • Provide a high standard of patient-centred care for all patients attending the DEXA service, ensuring examinations are performed safely, efficiently, and with dignity and respect at all times.
  • Act as the patient advocate, promoting patient rights, privacy, and wellbeing throughout the care pathway within the department and any remote clinical setting.
  • Work as an experienced autonomous practitioner, demonstrating advanced clinical skills beyond those expected of a Band 5 Radiographer/Technologist and delivering examinations to a consistently high standard.
  • Liaise with referrers to clarify clinical information and ensure examinations are appropriately justified. Provide advice and support to Consultants, GPs, Nurses, and Allied Health Professionals.
  • Operate specialised imaging equipment safely and effectively, maintaining high technical competence and ensuring compliance with departmental policies and procedures.
  • Assess individual patient communication needs and communicate effectively, sensitively, and empathetically with patients, carers, and relatives before, during, and after examinations.
  • Review images and examination data to ensure diagnostic quality, taking appropriate action where additional imaging or follow-up is required.
  • Maintain high standards of infection prevention and control, ensuring safe use and decontamination of equipment.
  • Participate in safe patient and equipment handling, adhering to Trust manual handling policies, risk assessments, and safety procedures.
