You will play an important part in delivering high-quality patient care, undertaking a range of clinical duties such as health checks, monitoring long-term conditions, phlebotomy, NHS Health Checks, wound care support and other delegated clinical activities.

Main duties of the job
As a Healthcare Assistant, you will be a key member of the clinical team, supporting the delivery of safe, effective and patient-centred care across the practice. You will work closely with nurses, GPs and other healthcare professionals to provide a range of clinical services and support patients in managing their health and wellbeing.

The role includes undertaking a variety of clinical procedures such as phlebotomy, NHS Health Checks, blood pressure monitoring, ECGs, health promotion activities and other delegated duties appropriate to your training and competence. You will support the monitoring of patients with long-term conditions and contribute to preventative healthcare initiatives.

You will have regular contact with patients, providing a welcoming and professional experience while promoting healthy lifestyles and supporting patients to access the most appropriate services. The role also involves maintaining accurate clinical records, ensuring equipment is appropriately maintained and stocked, and contributing to the smooth running of clinics.

Job responsibilities

• Undertake phlebotomy and process specimens in accordance with practice procedures.
• Perform NHS Health Checks and support preventative health initiatives.
• Record clinical observations including blood pressure, pulse, height, weight, BMI, phlebotomy and oxygen saturations.
• Carry out ECGs and other clinical procedures within competencies and training.
• Support the monitoring and review of patients with long-term conditions.
• Assist with wound care and dressings as delegated by the nursing team.
• Provide health promotion advice and signpost patients to relevant services and support.
• Prepare patients for clinical examinations and procedures.
• Maintain accurate and contemporaneous clinical records using the practice clinical system.
• Ensure clinical rooms are stocked, clean and prepared for use.
• Undertake infection prevention and control activities in line with practice policies.
• Monitor and maintain clinical equipment, reporting faults as required.
• Chaperone patients in accordance with practice policy.
• Identify and escalate safeguarding concerns relating to children and vulnerable adults.
• Work collaboratively with GPs, nurses and the wider multidisciplinary team.
• Support quality improvement initiatives, audits and practice projects.
• Participate in mandatory training, continuing professional development and regular appraisal.
• Contribute to delivering safe, effective and patient-centred care across the practice.
• Undertake any other duties appropriate to the role and level of competence.
