Job summary
We are looking for two exceptional candidates to join the Colorectal Department in the Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The successful candidates will join a team of 8 colorectal consultants to provide general and specialist colorectal care to the population of Gloucestershire and well as participating in the emergency general surgery rota.

There are two posts. Both will be involved in the management of patients with colorectal cancer and will take part in the emergency general surgery rota. To complement the existing special interests and planning for the future we are looking for candidates with the following special interests:

Post A: IBD surgery
The appointee will be expected to work with the existing colorectal surgeons with an IBD interest, to maintain and develop the IBD service. The surgeons work closely with our gastroenterology colleagues, which includes the delivery of combined clinics.

Post B: Anal cancer management
The Trust is the regional anal cancer centre and treats patients from Worcestershire and Herefordshire in addition to the local population. The appointee will be expected to join the existing surgeon in providing surgical input into the management of patients with anal cancer. This will include the assessment and treatment of patients with HSIL.

Main duties of the job

• Clinical Care: Deliver high-quality patient care, including assessment, treatment and ward rounds, and provide clinical support to junior medical and nursing staff. Participate in the agreed on-call and out-of-hours rota.
• Clinical Leadership: Provide senior clinical support and work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to ensure safe, effective and coordinated care.
• Education and Training: Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and support the development of junior medical staff. Act as Educational Supervisor where agreed.
• Management: Participate in departmental and Trust meetings and contribute to service development and improvement.
• Clinical Governance: Promote evidence-based practice, follow NICE and professional guidance, and participate in clinical audit, risk management, quality improvement and management of incidents and complaints.
• Professional Development: Maintain CME/CPD and participate in annual job planning and appraisal.
• Research: Support and participate in clinical research where appropriate.
• Professional Responsibilities: Work in accordance with Trust policies and procedures and contribute effectively to team-based working.

Job responsibilities
1. Clinical Responsibilities/Key Responsibilities

• The appointee will be expected to share responsibility for the delivery of high-quality care to the patients presenting to the Department.
• To examine and treat patients on the shop floor of the Department.
• To support the clinical decision making of junior medical and nursing staff.
• To provide on call support. To attend the Department out of hours as per agreed protocols.
• To carry out ward rounds.

2. Professional Development, Education and Training

• To provide conditions for improved training opportunities in line with national and local recommendations arising out of MMC and related requirements.
• To participate in the undergraduate teaching programme.
• To assist and participate with the development of postgraduate training for F1s, F2s, Core Trainees, STs and other staff as appropriate.
• Where agreed, to act as Educational Supervisor to junior and middle grade medical staff, being responsible for their appraisal and personal development planning.

3. Management and Leadership

• To provide medical information for the development of systems appropriate for Trust needs.
• To participate in departmental consultant and senior staff meetings whilst remaining within the framework of the agreed strategy of the Trust and the Department.
• To attend other departmental, Divisional and Trust meetings as necessary.
• To attend regional and national meetings as necessary.
• To undertake all work in accordance with Trust procedures and operating policies.

4. Research and Development

• The post-holder will be encouraged to be active in clinical research.

5. Communications and Working Relationships

• To work within the framework of team decisions.
• To take a whole systems to working with the wider health community.
• To show initiative, enthusiasm and flexibility.

6. Clinical Governance

• To undertake all work in accordance with Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust procedures and operating policies.
• To attend accredited conferences and meetings to update personal level of clinical practice, teaching and management skills in line with CME/CPD requirements.
• To participate in an annual Job Planning Review process.
• To participate in the Trusts annual Appraisal process and to respond to any identified development needs.
• To adhere to the Trusts Adverse Clinical Incident Policy.

7. Other Audit (as agreed with Service Line Director)

• To promote evidence based practice. To respond appropriately to NICE guidance. To change own and others clinical practice in response to new clinical developments.
• To undertake and supervise relevant clinical audit topics.
• To be involved in risk management and quality assurance.
• To remain up to date and engaged in CME/CPD as per RCS guidelines.
• To respond appropriately to complaints and critical incidents.
• The post holder will be expected to take part in developing clinical audit in accordance with agreed Directorate and Corporate Clinical Governance programmes. These build on the considerable progress already made by the Trust in clinical audit and continuous quality improvement.

8. General Working Conditions
The places of work for this post are Gloucestershire Royal and Cheltenham General Hospitals. Other work locations, including off-site working, may be agreed in the post-holders Job Plan where appropriate.

The on-call commitment will be delivered at Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust on both sites. Most of the established consultants do provide some service at one of our peripheral community hospitals.

The post-holder will generally be expected to undertake their Programmed Activities at the principal place of work or other locations agreed in the Job Plan. Exceptions will include travelling between work sites and attending official meetings away from the workplace.

You may be required to work at any site within the Trust.

• Validated logbook indicating adequate and appropriate level of specialist colorectal surgical operative experience
• Training and experience in laparoscopic colorectal surgery
