Job summary
The main role of the post holder will be to undertake neuro-ophthalmology research relating to optic neuritis, risk factors and outcomes. The position holder will work closely with Consultants and research staff, to support study set up activities and subsequent recruitment across 3 NHS recruiting study sites.

Main duties of the job
The post will be under the direct supervision of Dr Braithwaite. They will support the research development of other members within the team including the clinical research technician/coordinator, and other staff within the department.

The results from this project will be presented as conference abstracts and publications at study completion. The post holder will also be expected to participate in monthly departmental clinical research governance meetings. They will gain experience setting up and delivering non-commercial research studies.

The King's College London Frost Eye Research Unit runs alongside the ophthalmology service and Medical Eye Unit service at St Thomas' hospital. Our department has a proven track record of nationally and internationally recognised research focusing on the cause and treatment of eye disease, alongside clinical expertise in the diagnosis and treatment in all sub-specialities of Ophthalmology.

Job responsibilities
Duties and responsibilities

• Providing clinical support for neuro-ophthalmology research projects
• Contributing to the development overall of the research department & ophthalmology service
• Preparing research study standard operating procedures
• Coordinating and participating in patient and public involvement and engagement activities
• Coordinating and monitoring research study recruitment
• Liaising with research study participants in person, via email and via telephone, to address any queries or to provide support for study participation, e.g. administering questionnaires
• Arranging and supporting participant sample collection (e.g. saliva)
• Electronic medical record and imaging review and retrospective data extraction, data entry into secure platform (e.g. Redcap), data review, data cleaning, data analysis
• Preparation of scientific/research data to be presented at internal and external meetings in relation to the programme of research where relevant
• Preparation, or contribution to the preparation of, manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals

Training of junior and allied health professional staff:
The postholder will take responsibility for the training and direction of junior staff and allied health professionals in the research team who are allocated to him/her under aegis of the training plan that that postholder has agreed with their supervising consultant.

Teaching:
The postholder will be expected to contribute as appropriate in the teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate students, or clinical research staff.

Clinical Governance:
All medical and dental staff are expected to take part in clinical governance activity, including clinical audit, clinical guideline and protocol development and clinical risk management.

Person Specification
Qualifications and Training
Essential

• Full GMC Registration and a licence to practise
• FRCOphth Part 1 or equivalent

Desirable

• Good Clinical Practice certificate
• Human Tissue Authority certificate

Clinical Experience
Essential

• Basic clinical experience equivalent to or exceeding completion of the Foundation Year 2 training program

Desirable

• Able to understand clinical history, clinical signs, and assess OCT and visual field imaging parameters

Knowledge and Skills
Essential

• Ability to work as an effective member of a multidisciplinary team

Desirable

• Familiarity with electronic health care record systems, EPIC and/or Open Eyes and/or Medisoft
• Familiarity with OCT devices, and image saving and exporting processes

Research
Essential

• Understanding of the principles and applications of clinical research
• Evidence of ability to attend to detail and produce high-quality work.
• Evidence of completion/delivery of projects
• High level of proficiency in use of word, power point and excel

Desirable

• Evidence of previous experience supporting and/or delivering research activities
• Experience of use of Qualtrics and/or Redcap secure data platforms
