Job summary
The Radiology Department at Bronglais Hospital are delighted to offer an opportunity for an experienced and motivated practitioner to join the team as a DEXA Reporting Specialist Clinical Technologist/Radiographer.

This advanced practitioner role combines independent DEXA reporting, clinical DEXA scanning, leadership, and service development. The successful candidate will work autonomously within a specialist team, producing high-quality DEXA reports, including vertebral fracture assessments and fracture risk evaluations, while supporting the delivery and development of the DEXA service across the Health Board.

Applicants should possess extensive experience in DEXA scanning and image analysis, a relevant healthcare qualification with professional registration (HCPC, RCT or NMC), and a recognised DXA reporting qualification. Strong leadership, communication and mentoring skills are essential.

This is an excellent opportunity to play a key role in osteoporosis diagnosis and management, contribute to service improvement, and support the education and development of future practitioners.

Main duties of the job
Clinical Practice
  • Perform and supervise DEXA examinations.
  • Independently validate, analyse and report DEXA scans.
  • Undertake vertebral fracture assessment (VFA) and fracture risk assessment.
  • Ensure compliance with ROS, HCPC, IR(ME)R and departmental standards.
  • Act as an entitled operator under IR(ME)R 2017.
  • Support patient management pathways and communicate urgent findings appropriately.

Reporting Responsibilities
  • Produce independent clinical reports.
  • Participate in governance and peer review activities.
  • Contribute to out-of-hours reporting services.
  • Ensure reporting quality and adherence to national guidance.

Leadership and Management
  • Full line-management responsibility for DEXA staff.
  • Recruitment, appraisal, performance management and sickness management.
  • Workforce planning and rota development.
  • Development and review of SOPs, policies and service improvements.
  • Support operational leads and Deputy Head of Radiology.

Education and Training
  • Supervise students and newly qualified staff.
  • Deliver training and mentoring programmes.
  • Assess and sign-off competencies.
  • Develop annual training plans.

Governance and Quality
  • Lead audits and quality improvement projects.
  • Participate in research activities.
  • Act as Radiation Protection Supervisor (RPS) within designated areas.
  • Ensure compliance with IR(ME)R, IRR, Health & Safety and Infection Prevention requirements.

Person Specification
Qualifications and Knowledge
Essential
  • MSc in Nuclear Medicine or Diagnostic Radiography (or alternative level 7 qualification in a relevant scientific discipline) OR BSc in Nuclear Medicine or Diagnostic Radiography or Nursing scientific or healthcare discipline or Diagnostic Radiography or in the field of osteoporosis.
  • Leadership training or qualification or demonstrable equivalent experience
  • Professional registration (HCPC, RCT or NMC). Evidence of up-do-date CPD.
  • DXA reporting qualification (Pg Cert or Pg Dip), or other reporting qualification and demonstrable levels of experience in DXA scanning or reporting or expert levels of experience in patient management in the context of FLS (Fracture Liaison Services).
  • Royal Osteoporosis Society (ROS) National Training Scheme for Bone Densitometry or extensive experience in DXA scanning and DXA image validation. If not held at the time of appointment, the post holder will be required to complete this certification within two years of employment.
  • Expert knowledge of anatomy and pathology associated with DXA scanning and reporting and with Nuclear Medicine/Diagnostic Radiography
  • Sound knowledge of governance processes related to reporting and service management.
  • Expert understanding and working knowledge of PACS and healthcare digital systems

Desirable
  • Knowledge of risk management and clinical governance
  • Expert knowledge of IR(ME)R 2017 and IRR
  • Specialist knowledge of PET/CT and molecular therapy procedures

Experience
Essential
  • Extensive previous experience in DXA scanning and DXA image validation or in patient management in the context of FLS (Fracture Liaison Services)
  • Demonstrable previous experience in DXA reporting or in other healthcare disciplines
  • Extensive experience in DXA, osteoporosis/FLS, Nuclear Medicine or Diagnostic Radiography departments (since qualification)
  • Experience in training and mentoring of junior staff and/or students

Desirable
  • Experience working with a range of patients including paediatric
  • Experience of managing a team e.g. recruitment and performance appraisals etc
  • Experience of producing statistical reports e.g. departmental performance etc
  • Experience as RPS (radiation protection supervisor).
  • Produced research (published scientific articles or communications presented in national or international conferences) in the field of DXA and osteoporosis.
  • Experience with equipment trouble shooting
