Job summary
Join our General Surgery team and play a key role in delivering high-quality surgical care to patients across Hywel Dda University Health Board. This post offers the opportunity to work within a supportive and collaborative clinical environment, providing both elective and emergency surgical services to local communities.

The successful candidate will contribute to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of surgical conditions, working closely with colleagues across the multidisciplinary team to ensure patients receive safe, effective and person-centred care. You will take part in a 1:4 emergency rota, supporting the delivery of a responsive 24-hour surgical service. Consultant support is available on-site during normal working hours and off-site out of hours.

Working alongside experienced surgical, medical, nursing and allied health professional colleagues, you will help deliver excellent patient care while building strong relationships with patients, families and carers, ensuring they remain informed and involved throughout their treatment journey.

Main duties of the job
As part of the General Surgery team, you will contribute to the continued development of a high-quality, patient-focused surgical service, providing assessment, treatment and ongoing management for patients presenting with a broad range of acute and elective surgical conditions.

Key responsibilities will include:
  • Participating in the delivery and development of a comprehensive General Surgery service.
  • Undertaking acute patient assessment, investigation and treatment within General Surgery.
  • Contributing to the provision of emergency surgical care through participation in the on-call rota.
  • Providing effective clinical leadership and working collaboratively with multidisciplinary colleagues to ensure the highest standards of patient care.
  • Supporting the development of teaching, training and research across the organisation.
  • Working closely with clinical, managerial and professional colleagues to deliver safe, effective and efficient healthcare services.
  • Participating in audit activity, quality improvement initiatives and postgraduate teaching programmes.
  • Maintaining accurate, clear and timely clinical records and ensuring effective communication across clinical teams.
  • Monitoring and responding to patient feedback and experience measures to support continuous service improvement.
  • Promoting and delivering evidence-based clinical practice to achieve the best possible outcomes for patients.

About us
Hywel Dda University Health Board plans and provides NHS healthcare services for people living in Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire, and bordering counties.

We have over 13,000 staff and together we provide primary, community, in-hospital, mentalhealthand learning disabilities services.

We work in partnership with the three local authorities, as well as public, private and third sector colleagues, including our valued team of volunteers.

Qualifications and Knowledge
Essential
  • Full GMC Registration and Licence to Practice.
  • Valid Certified Advanced Life Support.

Desirable
  • Additional clinical qualification(s).
  • Evidence of working towards membership of the Royal College.

Clinical Governance
Essential
  • Participation in clinical audit (or quality improvement project) and understanding role of audit in improving medical practice

Desirable
  • Knowledge of risk management.
  • Knowledge of annual job planning/appraisal review process.

Experience
Essential
  • Shall have completed at least four years' full-time postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part-time or flexible basis) at least two of which will be in a specialty training programme in a relevant specialty or as a fixed term specialty trainee in a relevant specialty; or shall have equivalent experience and competencies.
  • Able to demonstrate core competencies and clinical skills relevant to the post.

Desirable
  • NHS Experience.
  • Able to demonstrate evidence of leading a team.

Teaching
Essential
  • Willingness to teach all grades of professional multidisciplinary staff.

Desirable
  • Evidence of organising programmes and teaching medical students and resident doctors.
