Job summary
The Band 6 Registered Nurse plays a key role in delivering high-quality, evidence-based, patient-centred care throughout the perioperative journey within their specialist area. As an experienced practitioner, they provide visible clinical leadership and support the day-to-day coordination of safe and effective patient care, including taking responsibility for the clinical area when required in the absence of the Theatre Coordinator.

Working closely with the multidisciplinary team, the post holder helps ensure the smooth, safe and efficient delivery of surgical services while maintaining the highest standards of clinical practice, patient safety and professional accountability. They contribute to the operational management of the department and actively support workforce development, education, quality improvement, research, clinical governance and service transformation initiatives.

The post holder acts as a positive role model, fostering a culture of continuous learning, collaboration and excellence. Main duties of the job
  • The Band 6 Perioperative Practitioner provides expert, evidence-based, patient-centred care throughout the perioperative pathway while delivering visible clinical leadership within their specialist area. Working collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team, they will coordinate safe and effective patient care, regularly taking charge of the clinical area in the absence of the Theatre Coordinator.
  • The post holder will ensure compliance with professional standards, Trust policies, and national guidance, maintaining high standards of patient safety, clinical practice, documentation, risk management, infection prevention, and safeguarding. They will support service improvement, quality assurance, audit, research, and the implementation of evidence-based practice to enhance patient outcomes and service delivery.
  • As a senior practitioner, they will lead, support, and develop staff and learners, contributing to education, workforce development, recruitment, and staff wellbeing while fostering a positive, inclusive, and high-performing team culture.
  • The post holder will act as a professional role model, promoting continuous improvement, organisational learning, efficient use of resources, and the Trust's values of Kind, Collaborative, Expert, and Aspirational, while supporting emergency preparedness, clinical governance, and operational excellence.

Education/ qualifications
Essential
  • Registered Nurse (NMC) or Registered Operating Department Practitioner (HCPC
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
  • Relevant Perioperative nursing experience

Desirable
  • Evidence of leadership development or willingness to undertake a recognised leadership programme.
  • Practice Assessor and/or Practice Supervisor.

Experience
Essential
  • Experience within a busy acute perioperative environment including elective and emergency surgery
  • Evidence of participation in audit or quality improvement projects
  • Experience taking charge of a clinical area or coordinating perioperative activity
  • Where appointed to a specialist clinical area, demonstrates specialist knowledge and competence relevant to that speciality (e.g. trauma, vascular, ENT, gynaecology or ophthalmology).
  • Experience taking charge of a clinical area or coordinating perioperative activity

Desirable
  • Involvement in service development or change management
  • Evidence of continuing professional development, this will be a relevant post registration qualification or equivalent experience

  • Able to manage complex and challenging situations.

  • Competence in electronic patient record systems
