Job summaryApplications are invited for a dynamic and motivated Consultant Paediatrician with a special interest in Community Paediatrics to join our friendly and supportive team at the James Paget University Hospital. The post requires experience in Acute Paediatrics and Neonates with a special interest in Community Paediatrics. The Community Paediatric service is based at the Newberry Children's Centre.
The appointee will be expected to hold CCT in General Paediatrics or be within 6 months of attaining it.
Applicants will be required to undertake a full Paediatric and Neonatal commitment including 1:11 Hot / Ward Weeks, and 1:11 Neonatal Weeks. Resident commitment is until 22:00 daily and then non-resident. Clinics will be cancelled during Hot Week.
Whilst on call you will be covering the children's ward and a level 1 Neonatal Unit.

Main duties of the jobThe postholder will share the Acute and Community Paediatric workload with consultant colleagues, including out-of-hours responsibilities with a Consultant on-call rota. The team also supports mutual out of hours cover for annual, study and professional leave.

Job responsibilities- Share with consultant colleagues the Community and Acute Paediatric workload.
- Provide with the other consultants a mutual out of hours cover for annual, study and professional leave.
- Out of hours/Weekend responsibilities are 1 in 11 week night and weekend on call
- Hot week responsibilities are 1 in 11 alternating Paediatric and Neonatal hot weeks
- Provision with Consultant colleagues of the James Paget University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness and the proper functioning of the department;
- To conduct Neurodevelopmental (ND) clinics as part of a ND team.
- Provide support to ADHD specialists at the Newberry Child Developmental Centre.
- Professional supervision and management of junior medical staff;
- Responsibilities for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and for contributing to undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing medical education activity, locally and nationally;
- Participating in medical audit, the Trusts Clinical Governance processes and in CPD;
- Involvement in research
- Managerial, including budgetary, responsibilities where appropriate;
- Where it is agreed between the parties, work on behalf of James Paget University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust or services provided by the Trust for other agencies, e.g. the prison service.
Person SpecificationEducation and QualificationsEssential- MBBS or Basic Medical Degree
- MRCPCH, MRCP or equivalent
- CCT and/or inclusion on the Specialist Register of GMC or within 6 months of completion of training at the date of interview.
- Full GMC Registration
Experience & KnowledgeEssential- Ability to provide expert clinical opinion across a wide range of problems within the specialty of Acute and Community Paediatrics
- Neonatal experience - six months as SpR in Year 3,4,5 or equivalent
- Ability to organise and prioritise work effectively
- Able to plan and develop the service
- Willingness to participate in and lead a multi disciplinary team, balancing departmental and personal objectives
- Valid Level 3 Safeguarding Training
- Minimum 18 months experience/ training in community Paediatrics at tier 2 level including 6 months in an accredited unit for subspecialty training
- To be able to conduct Neurodevelopmental clinics as part of a ND team
Desirable- 6-12 months experience/ training in Respiratory/Allergy or allied specialties (PICU/NICU)
Academic AchievementsEssential- Ability to use research outcomes in clinical practice
- Experience of conducting clinical audit
- Knowledge of using evidence base to support decision making
Desirable- Involvement in research projects and published papers
Key SkillsEssential- Ability to communicate clearly with colleagues, laboratory staff, and other staff and agencies
- Evidence of teaching experience/aptitude especially multi-disciplinary groups.
