Job SummaryThe Foundation Training Programme Directors (FTPDs) are responsible for the overall management and quality control of Foundation Training Programme at Kettering General Hospital.
FTPD for QI and Faculty Development will lead on faculty development, assist on allocation of educational/clinical supervisor on placement rotations.
FTPD for training is responsible for managing and coordinating induction, mandatory training, generic training programme, portfolio development and supporting trainees during either Year 1 or 2.
All FTPDs will work closely with the local lead educators, to ensure that each placement of the programme and the programme meets the LETB standard for training and that each trainee is able to access a comprehensive range of experiences which will enable them to gain the competences necessary for full registration and completion of foundation training. TPDs work in collaboration and cross-cover each other.
The post holder will be required to work closely with the hospital-based Foundation Programme Coordinator (FPC), FY1 TPD, FY2 TPD and the Director and Deputy Director of Medical Education and Medical Education Manager
The post holder will be subject to educational appraisal for the FTPD role.
Main duties of the job- Demonstrated track record in medical education, delivering high-quality training and learning support, with strong knowledge of clinical governance and equality, diversity and inclusion legislation.
- Development and delivery of foundation training programmes in line with Department of Health, UKFPO and GMC guidance, with continuous quality improvement.
- Collaborative working with the Director of Medical Education and Educational/Clinical Supervisors to manage and quality-assure foundation programmes, ensuring rotations have current job plans mapped to the Foundation Curriculum. And all placements meet defined educational aims, with clear documentation of core and general professional competence attainment.
- Review and updating of job descriptions for foundation posts to maintain educational relevance.
- Liaison with departments to support implementation of Self-Development Time (SDT) and trainee engagement with e-portfolios.
- Attendance and active participation in relevant local and regional medical education meetings.
- Provision of effective induction coordinated teaching and appropriate educational supervision aligned with curriculum requirements.
- Establishment and maintenance of robust selection processes and a database of trained local educators.
- Flexible working to balance academic, educational and clinical commitments.

Job responsibilities- To ensure that the training programme meets the requirements of the educational contracts or agreements for foundation training.
- To ensure that each programme and its constituent rotations have a current job plan that meets the educational aims specified for the programme and map to the Foundation Curriculum.
- To ensure that each placement in the programme meets the educational aims specified for the placement. This should include a clear description that outlines how the competences including the general professional competences are covered in each placement.
- To ensure job description of individual posts within the foundation programme are updated and current.
- Liaise with Departments to support implementation of SDT (Self Development Time) to help trainees engaging with their online portfolio and professional development.
- Attend all relevant local and regional meetings such as Medical Education Committee etc.
- The role requires constant involvement with Medical Education staff and trainees therefore is expected that the FTPD spends the designated 1 PA each week whilst being on site.
- Providing access to suitable induction, coordinated teaching and educational supervision.
- To support arranging teaching for foundation trainees liaising with internal and external speakers.
- Providing access to clinical supervision and trained assessors.
- Monitoring the attendance and performance of each foundation doctor at regular intervals and initiating remedial support for any doctor in difficulty.
- Collecting evidence about attendance and performance to corroborate the content of individual foundation doctors e-portfolios and enable decisions about recommendations for registration and certification.
- To liaise regularly with the FSD, Foundation School Manager (FSM) and other Foundation Training Programme Director/Tutor (FTPD/T) to ensure that best practices are shared and there is a coordinated approach to the development and management of foundation training programmes.
- To attend foundation school management committee meetings (or equivalent).
- To attend (or send a suitably qualified deputy) to any sub-committees or working groups established by the Foundation School Management Committee.
- To support recruitment of foundation doctors via national or regional processes
- To ensure that all educational and clinical supervisors have received appropriate training (including equality and diversity training) for their role as educators, supervisors and assessors.
- To ensure that all educational supervisors are familiar with the required national documentation to be completed prior to full registration with the GMC, completion of foundation training and for revalidation.
- To ensure that there is a sufficient number of trained staff able to assess foundation doctors.
- To ensure that there is an effective method of selection and reselection of educational and clinical supervisors in conjunction with the director of medical education/clinical tutor, local HR departments and the LETB.
- To ensure there is a database of local educators (educational supervisors, clinical supervisors, trained assessors).
- To attend development programmes for clinical educators and maintain skills in medical education.
- To lead development projects by mutual agreement and share the results.

Person SpecificationQualificationsEssential- Primary medical qualification.
- GMC Registered with a licence to practice.
ExperienceEssential- Currently working within Kettering General Hospital at substantive consultant role
- Demonstrates a track record of achievement in education including the provision of training/learning support.
- Willingness to develop training programmes in line with Department of Health, UK Foundation Programme Office (UKFPO) and General Medical Council guidelines.
- Willingness to explore opportunities for the further development of multi-professional and inter-professional education.
- Demonstrates excellent knowledge of the policies and frameworks for clinical governance and the ability to ensure effective implementation within the areas of influence of this role.
