Job summaryApplications are invited to apply for a fixed term 12-month, part-time 0.6 WTE consultant post in orthodontics at King's College Dental Institute, Denmark Hill and Queen Mary's Hospital, Sidcup sites which are part of King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
The post has arisen due to the retirement and dropped sessions of some consultants and offers an exciting opportunity to become part of a large, experienced, and supportive team of 14 consultants across both sites. The service provides specialist hospital-based orthodontic care, managing approximately 2,700 new referrals and 15,000 outpatient attendances each year. The King's orthodontic service is recognised for its strong multidisciplinary approach, with dedicated orthognathic, hypodontia, orthodontic-restorative, paediatric-oral surgery, and sleep aponea joint clinics. The service is supported by good clinical, dental/OMFS laboratories, digital facilities and a dental nursing team on both sites. This role offers an outstanding opportunity to contribute to high-quality patient care, in addition, to orthodontic teaching and training of King's College London undergraduate and postgraduate trainees, and HEE StR & Post CCST registrars as well. The successful candidate will be contributing to the ongoing service development within a collaborative and academically active environment.

Together with other colleagues, to provide a high-quality care service to patients. This includes all aspects of treatment and relevant management duties for the proper functioning of the Care Group.
Provide clinical supervision of junior dental practitioners as a shared responsibility with other consultant colleagues.
Responsible for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contributing to CPD and clinical governance initiatives.
Responsible for outpatient clinic commitments in peripheral hospitals as agreed with the Care Group's management team where part of the service structure.
Contribute to the audit programmes, Morbidity and Mortality, Clinical Governance programmes and Learning from Deaths.
Conduct all activities within the contracted level of service and operating plan for service(s).
Work in conjunction with clinical and other professional colleagues to ensure that the productivity of staff within the specialty is maintained and their job satisfaction is enhanced. This may include involvement in the appraisal process for peers and/or junior colleagues.
Undertake Care Group management duties as agreed with the Care Group/Departmental Manager/Clinical Director.
Prepare for and undertake the protective interventions that you are responsible for in a manner that is consistent with evidence-based practice and maintaining patient safety.

Take an active role in the formulation, implementation and monitoring of the Care Groups Business Plan. This may include assisting with discussions regarding service plans and developments with internal and external agencies.
Conduct all activities within the contracted level of service and operating plan for service(s).
Exercise professional leadership for all staff working in the specialty. This will include fostering and developing projects focused on these ends and ensuring that the momentum of post-qualification professional education and other appropriate training is maintained.
Work in conjunction with clinical and other professional colleagues to ensure that the productivity of staff within the specialty is maintained and their job satisfaction is enhanced. This may include involvement in the appraisal process for peers and/or junior colleagues.
Undertake Care Group management duties as agreed with the Care Group/Departmental Manager/Clinical Director.
Be aware of, and comply with, all Trust infection prevention and control policies, to include hand hygiene, personal hygiene, environmental and food hygiene.

Person SpecificationQualificationsEssential- Registerable UK dental qualifications or equivalent
Desirable- Fellowship in Dental Surgery or Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery or equivalent
Higher QualificationsEssential- Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship Examination (ISFE) in Orthodontics or equivalent
- Membership in Orthodontics (Morth) at the Royal College of Surgeons or equivalent
Desirable- Other higher degree or diploma (e.g., MSc, PhD or equivalent Certification in Teaching)
RegistrationEssential- Full registration with the United Kingdom General Dental Council (GDC)
- Name on Specialist Register on date of taking up appointment
Training and ExperienceEssential- Successful completion of an SAC approved five-year minimum training programme in Orthodontics, or within six months of completion, or equivalent
AdministrationEssential- Experience in day-to-day organisation of clinical orthodontics services in a busy Teaching Hospital
