Job summary
This part-time Consultant in Orthodontics post sits within the OMFS Department at Homerton University Hospital and has been established to support the development of a new consultant-led orthognathic service. The post-holder will provide specialist orthodontic assessment, treatment planning and ongoing management for patients with complex dentofacial and skeletal discrepancies, working closely with OMFS colleagues and the wider multidisciplinary team to deliver safe, effective and high-quality care.

Main duties of the job
  • Provide consultant-level orthodontic assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning and care for patients requiring specialist and multidisciplinary management, including orthognathic treatment.
  • Work collaboratively with OMFS consultants and the wider multidisciplinary team in the development and delivery of the Trust's orthognathic service.
  • Undertake new patient clinics, review clinics and treatment sessions, ensuring timely clinical decision-making, accurate record keeping and high standards of patient communication.
  • Contribute to clinical governance, audit, quality improvement, CPD and service development activities in line with Trust and professional requirements.
  • Support teaching, training and supervision of trainees and other staff, where appropriate, and contribute to the ongoing development of the department.

Job responsibilities
  • Deliver consultant-led orthodontic care for patients with complex malocclusion, dentofacial deformity and other conditions requiring specialist multidisciplinary input.
  • Participate in joint assessment, treatment planning and follow-up of orthognathic patients alongside OMFS consultants and relevant multidisciplinary colleagues.
  • Contribute to the establishment, development and continuous improvement of the orthognathic pathway, helping to ensure safe, efficient and patient-centred care.
  • Maintain accurate, contemporaneous clinical records, correspondence and treatment documentation in accordance with Trust policies, professional standards and governance requirements.
  • Work closely with nursing, administrative and managerial colleagues to support effective clinic utilisation, timely communication and smooth patient pathways.
  • Take part in clinical governance activity, including audit, quality improvement, incident review, appraisal, revalidation and mandatory training requirements.
  • Contribute to teaching, supervision and support for trainees and other members of the multidisciplinary team, in keeping with departmental and Trust expectations.
  • Support research, service evaluation and innovation activity where appropriate, particularly where this contributes to improved patient outcomes and service development.
  • Undertake duties in accordance with Trust policies and statutory requirements relating to equality, health and safety, infection prevention and control, confidentiality, safeguarding and information governance.

Person Specification
Qualification & RegistrationEssential
  • Full registration with the General Dental Council (GDC)
  • Inclusion on the GDC Specialist List for Orthodontics
  • Completion of recognised specialist orthodontic training

Training & ExperienceEssential
  • Appropriate training and experience to practise independently at consultant level. Clinical training equivalent to UK CCT in Orthodontics.
  • Experience in the assessment and management of complex orthodontic and orthognathic cases.
  • Experience of working within a multidisciplinary clinical team

Desirable
  • Experience contributing to the development or expansion of an orthognathic service

Clinical Skills & KnowledgeEssential
  • Expertise in multidisciplinary care, specifically the orthognathic interface
  • Sound knowledge of contemporary orthodontic and orthognathic practice
  • Understanding of clinical governance, risk management, and quality.

Leadership & ManagementEssential
  • Ability to work collaboratively with OMFS and other colleagues
  • Evidence of effective communication and leadership skills

Desirable
  • Experience in service development or quality improvement initiatives.

Teaching & AuditEssential
  • Commitment to continuing professional development (CPD)
  • Participation in audit and service evaluation

Desirable
  • Experience in teaching, training, or supervision of junior staff
