Locum Consultant in Infection - Medical MicrobiologyJob summaryThis post represents an exciting opportunity to combine clinical practice in diagnostic and laboratory microbiology with direct care to inpatients and outpatients with infection-related problems. It is a fixed term appointment to cover a colleague's maternity leave.
Main duties of the jobThe successful post holder will join and contribute to a strong innovative consultant body and it is envisaged that the post holder will complement and strengthen the existing subspecialties within the care group which include leadership for the infection prevention and control team, antimicrobial stewardship, OPAT, infection on the Intensive Care Units, hospital-acquired infection, surgical site infections, HIV medicine/co-infection (hepatitis / TB), travel-related infection, tuberculosis (including MDRTB), and the treatment of invasive fungal infections. On-call for Medical Microbiology/Clinical infection overnight and at weekends will be included on an approximately 1:8 basis. We strongly support flexible working in the department. We would encourage the post holder to take an interest in laboratory microbiology.

Person SpecificationQualificationsEssential- Full and specialist registration (and a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC) (or eligible for registration within six months of interview)
- The CCT should be in medical microbiology/virology, infectious diseases / medical microbiology or Infectious diseases/General Internal Medicine
- Applicants that are non-UK trained, will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT
Desirable- FRCPath (or equivalent) or expected by the date of interview.
- Diploma in Hospital Infection Control (or equivalent)
- Diploma of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (DTM&H)
- MRCP (or equivalent)
- An appropriate higher degree (e.g., an MD, PhD or equivalent)
- Recognised management qualification.
- Recognised teaching qualification.
ExperienceEssential- Experience in the management of patients with complex infection problems
- Experience providing clinical support to a microbiology laboratory.
- Experience of clinical audit
- Experience in training junior staff
Desirable- Experience in organising training programmes.
- Experience of teaching undergraduates
- Experience in antifungal management
- Experience of management of patients on OPAT
- Interest in laboratory microbiology development
SkillsEssential- Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of specialist service.
