Job Summary

If yes, this job may be perfect for you!** Applications are invited from enthusiastic and highly motivated individuals with specialist experience in haematology and blood transfusion for a full time Band 6 post to work in our modern and well-equipped Haematology and transfusion Laboratory at Royal Lancaster Infirmary.

Main Duties of the Job
Our laboratory is based at Royal Lancaster Infirmary and provides Haematology, Blood Transfusion analyses. The site provides specialist Oncology and Orthopaedic services along with routine services.

Our major equipment comprises Beckman Coulter DXH 900 analysers and ACL TOP 550s in the Haematology and coagulation section. Automation in Transfusion is provided by QuidelOrtho Vision analysers.

You will be based at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary, however you will be required to work across sites at both Westmorland General Hospital in Kendal and Lancaster hospitals.

The role can sometimes be quite physical, with moderate moving and handling requirements, therefore you will need to be able to move around the laboratory and assist in the movement of loads. You will be expected to work a 37.5 hr/ week (average) shift rota pattern that includes daytime, evenings, overnight, weekends and Bank Holidays once you have achieved competence during a satisfactory probationary period, for which appropriate AFC enhancements will be paid.

The Haematology and Transfusion Department at Royal Lancaster Infirmary is part of Lancashire and South Cumbria Pathology Services. The pathology service includes laboratories at Barrow-in-Furness (Furness General Hospital), Blackburn (Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital), Blackpool (Blackpool Victoria Hospital), Burnley (Burnley General Teaching Hospital), Chorley (Chorley General Hospital), Kendal (Westmorland General Hospital), Lancaster (Royal Lancaster Infirmary) and Preston (Royal Preston Hospital).

Job Responsibilities
Duties will include, but not be limited to:
  • Performs work duties to the standards required as a HCPC Biomedical Scientist
  • Undertake the correct procedures for the handling of specimens, pre and post analysis.
  • Maintain and operate equipment used in the preparation and analysis of specimens.
  • Perform a range of laboratory tests autonomously and demonstrate an understanding of the scientific basis for tests and the disease processes under investigation.
  • Demonstrate awareness of factors affecting sample integrity, risks associated with the sample reagents, or method and other tests indicated by the outcome of the analysis.
  • Use the main laboratory computer system in accordance with service requirements

Person Specification
Qualifications & Education
Essential
  • Degree (or equivalent) suitable for HCPC registration
  • HCPC Registered Biomedical Scientist
  • Completed Specialist Portfolio or equivalent
  • Uses continuing professional development as a means of selfdevelopment

Desirable
  • IBMS membership
  • NBTS Introduction to Blood Transfusion
  • Completion of relevant external analyser courses
  • NBTS Transfusion Specialist certificate
  • BBTS Transfusion Specialist certificate

Knowledge & Experience
Essential
  • Experience as a specialist in a clinical pathology laboratory
  • Understanding of health and safety legislation pertaining to clinical laboratories
  • Experience of the components of a quality management system
  • Experience of dealing with cold chain issue

Desirable
  • Problem solving ability
  • Extended specialist experience e.g blood film review, non-routine coagulation
  • Experience of working as a BMS in a Blood Sciences
  • Experience of UKAS/ MHRA inspections
