Job summary
We are seeking a motivated Band 6 Specialist Biomedical Scientist with previous NHS experience to join our Microbiology Department at Chesterfield as part of Derbyshire Pathology, a joint venture for Derby and Chesterfield laboratories which are both accredited to ISO 15189.

The department performs bacteriology, parasitology, serology, molecular testing and operates an extended working day and 24 hour on call service.

Main duties of the job
To undertake the day to day sample processing and analytical clinical investigations for Microbiology to the agreed standard of timeliness and quality. Supervise Band 5 Biomedical Scientists and support staff within their work area.

To engage in training of staff. To fully participate in on-call and weekend duties. Familiarisation and understanding of ISO 15189 standards, Health & Safety requirements; audit and training/education techniques is essential.

Experience of utilising transformation methodologies to drive change and improve service delivery is also desirable. Proactive individuals, with drive and dedication will excel in this post.

Education, Training and Qualifications
Essential
  • Attained the Institute of Biomedical sciences specialist Diploma or has demonstrable specific experience within a routine Pathology service laboratory
  • Accredited degree or equivalent and HCPC state registration

Desirable
  • Working towards an MSc in Biomedical sciences and the higher specialist Diploma in Biomedical Sciences
  • Participates in the Institute of Biomedical sciences Continual Professional Development (CPD) scheme

Knowledge & Experience
Essential
  • Fully conversance and competent in the use of the laboratory computer, PCs and VDUs
  • Able to use a variety of statistical and analytical procedures and testing equipment
  • Evidence of professional development attending both internal and external courses as appropriate to maintain an up to date knowledge of issues relating to Biomedical sciences
  • An understanding of good laboratory practice and laboratory health and safety

Experience
Essential

Skills
Essential
  • To communicate risk and quality control issues to senior staff in order to meet the quality objectives of the section
  • Can carry out basic troubleshooting on procedures and equipment
  • Can carry out or make basic recommendations of additional testing based on initial investigations
  • Is aware the pitfalls, interferences and suitability of investigations
