Job summary
As a HCPC Registered Biomedical Scientist, you will be a member of the Haematology team in Blood Sciences assisting in the delivery of a quality driven, cost effective, patient focused service consistent with LTHT Pathology objectives. To provide that service in a manner commensurate with the profession.

The post holders main role is to carry out the examination of pathological samples using various technologies and to report or present the results as appropriate.

Working in different sections of the department you will gain the knowledge and skills necessary to contribute towards the provision of an accurate and timely service for patients. You will be expected to apply professional judgements and specialist skills to technically complex and sometimes difficult situations, and how to work, often under pressure, either independently or as part of the team.

You will be required to communicate information, often related to patient management and care, to colleagues, healthcare staff and other organisations.

The post holder will be expected to gain competence in techniques to enable participation in the delivery of 24 hour Pathology service. This entails contracted participation in a 24/7 rota.

Planned interview date: 5th August.

Main duties of the job
This is an exciting time to join one of the largest Pathology departments in the country. Our new £30m Pathology building (on the St. James’s University Hospital site) and new Acute Hospital Laboratory (on the Leeds General Infirmary site) are now operational. The Centre for Laboratory Medicine opened in 2025 with one of the largest and most comprehensive automated track systems in the UK. Blood Sciences at Leeds is a global reference site for our Managed Service provider. The department processes around 15,000 patient samples each day and is constantly seeking to innovate using new technologies, IT and diagnostic methods to improve patient outcomes. This role offers the successful candidate an excellent opportunity to be part of an exceptionally skilled and motivated Biomedical workforce.

The department has a very engaged multi-disciplinary senior team and a well-developed quality management system. The successful candidate will be well supported by the wider scientific and clinical teams. The department is accredited to ISO15189 and by the IBMS as a training laboratory in both Clinical Biochemistry and Haematology.

Relevant training and support will be provided for the successful candidate, including (subject to an application process) support to complete an IBMS Specialist Portfolio.

What you will bring to the role
The successful candidate will work within a large hub laboratory, serving both Leeds Teaching Hospitals and the wider community. This includes the regional Oncology centre and the Leeds Children's Hospital, which is a unique opportunity for the successful candidate to gain experience in paediatric haematology. Therefore, the successful candidate must be registered with the HCPC and have demonstrable laboratory experience, along with a keen interest in the scientific field of Haematology.
